Q: Mac mini 2014 won't wake monitor via HDMI

Hello! I just purchased a brand new Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with Intel Iris 1536 MB, running Yosemite 10.10. It's connected to an Acer K242HL monitor via HDMI.

The monitor connection works correctly (I'm typing this on it now), until I attempt to wake the monitor from sleep. The Mac itself clearly wakes when I click the mouse (the white light stops blinking and stays solid), but the monitor does not respond. I have to power off/on the monitor to get it to wake up.

I have previously used the monitor with a MacBook Pro (via HDMI) in clamshell mode and had no problems with it waking up straight away, so I'm assuming the problem lies with the Mac mini.

Can anyone offer any advice about this? It's very annoying not being able to quickly wake up the display when I need to use the Mac.

Thanks!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Like the other users here I've connected the Mac Mini to my Acer LED display using an HDMI cable.  Now, 12 hours into ownership I'm experiencing unresolved problems?  Dumb.  I've used a PC user over twenty years without problems waking up my computer.  My first experience owning a Mac (14' Mac Min 2.6Ghz) and I can't even wake my computer from its sleep.  Hopefully Apple has a solution.

some extra insight to the problem can be found on another post

Mac Mini 2014 Oct cannot wake up after sleep

I also have the same problem with the monitor connected using the HDMi port, If the problem persist I will try the thunderbolt port

I may know whats going on with the wake from sleep issue. I have a Mac Mini 2012 but this  fix (see below) should work on any product running 10.8.2 Mine is at 10.10.1 and it worked.   First off you can tell if your Mac Mini is in sleep mode by looking at the small light on the front of the Mini. If its pulsing... going from bright to dim its in sleep mode. If you put your Mac in sleep mode, or it goes into sleep mode it will wake from sleep BUT ONLY for the first 4 hours. After 4 hours it will go into what is known as "safe sleep".  The light on the front will be off and you won't be able to wake your Mac. The only way to wake the Mac when in safe sleep is to hit the power button and then wait a minute or longer as your system will need to pull the data from the disk and load to ram. This is causing the issue where its not waking from sleep. You can move your mouse or hit the keys all you want but it won't wake from sleep. This is a real pain as you have to press the power button on the back of the Mac mini and wait for the system to come out of its slumber.   Here's what Apple says:

    1. With the release of the OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 supplemental update 2.0, a new feature was introduced to enter safe sleep after four hours of the computer being connected to AC power. This is an effort to comply with the European Energy Standards (ErP Lot6). This will only occur if there is no wireless or Ethernet activity and no activity from external devices such as USB storage devices. This is normal behavior for the following models:
      • MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 and later)
      • MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012 and later)
      • MacBook Air (Mid 2012 and later)
      • iMac (Late 2012 and later)
      • Mac mini (Late 2012 and later)

    Thanks for posting this.

Now I know that if I ever decide to move from North America to Europe, my Mac Mini will already be in compliance with European Energy Standards.  What a relief!

I too am having this problem. Only it is with the thunderbolt to VGA cable that is not waking up the projector. The HDMI connected to my Acer display is waking up from sleep but the projector will not wake up without unplugging and plugging it back in. Also today I experienced the funky screen color that an earlier post had a picture of. Also, my mac mini seems to be missing the Computer sleep slider under the energy saver settings. Is this normal? I have reinstalled OS X and to no avail the projector still does not wake from sleep. However, my Macbook Air wakes the projector just fine. This was the first time the Mac booted up and it has had the problem from the start.

Yes, probably you are right but I think in this topic we discuss different problem, at least me.

My Mac Mini wakes up after a mouse movement properly (light stops pulsing) but it does not couse my external monitor wakes up too.

This is the actual problem in my case and I suppose for many others here as well.

I'm running a 27" Kogan monitor from the Thunderbolt to DisplayPort. Works well including getting 2560x1440 display. HDMI only gave me 1920x1200 and was hit & miss to wake up. Since Mavericks and now Yosemite, I have to wobble the mouse around quite a bit and tap to space bar on the keyboard to wake up the screen.

I have a possible solution from an apple tech guy.

    In system/Library/LaunchAgents

    and

    System/Library/LaunchDaemons

note which apps have files in these 2 directories

    Do the same in users/library

copy the files to folders on the desktop with those names (agents & daemons)

remove the applications and associated files one at a time and see if the problem goes away

be sure the mac sleeps for at least an hour each time you do this to see if it wakes up properly

the last program removed will be the offender

In my case it was AVAST virus software. Deleted the program removed the files from the system Library and the user library as well and no more issues.

Let me know if this helps

I normally screen share my Mac Mini to my MacBook but the other day when I went to use it with my TV all I got was a black screen. After restarting my Mac Mini and getting the display to work I tried this and it seems to have worked so far:-

When you have the Mac Mini display on your TV screen switch the TV to another input source. Then put the Mac Mini to sleep (I did this via screen sharing the Mac Mini to my MacBook). Wake the Mac Mini after a short time and then select the relevant HDMI input on your TV.

Since then I have been able to get a display via HDMI on my TV with no problem.

Try this and see if it works for you.

Please disregard my previous post. I just woke up my Mac Mini to find that there was no HDMI Display.

Same problem. Getting frustrated. The only alternative that could possibly work is to change the energy saver settings. System Preferences>Energy Saver then change "Turn display off after:" to NEVER. Haven't had a chance to see the results yet but it's worth a try. Obviously this option will not be energy efficient and possibly diminish the life of your display.

Since I'm new to Mac and Apple I'm finding it incredibly hard to believe that 1. This problem exists and its not my lack of experience in solving this. 2. If the problem does in fact exist that there is no solution yet.

What I did tonight was to power off my ATV (3rd Gen) and reboot my Mac Mini (2014 10.10.1) and discovered that while the ATV is out of the equation then the HDMI connection works properly (i.e. when I switch the TV either onto standby or to another input source then when I switch back again the screen is displayed). When the ATV is powered on again then the HDMI connection starts misbehaving (i.e. when I switch the TV either onto standby or to another input source then when I switch back again the screen is NOT displayed).

I would be interested if someone else would try this to see if they get the same results.

Just to add my system to the collection. None of the workarounds in the thread have worked for me.

Mac Mini November 2014. Yosemite 10.10.1.

Viewsonic VP2770-LED connected to HDMI. Viewsonic input set to HDMI.

Wireless Keyboard and trackpad. Both Apple.

This is what happens for me.

Mac logged in and working. Viewsonic power light blue - i.e. Monitor on and connected.

Put Mac to sleep (Apple menu/sleep)

Viewsonic screen black. No signal message appears for 2 secs. Power light turns amber ( power saving mode according to Viewsonic manual)

Mac in sleep mode (LED on front pulsing)

    Now press a keyboard key

Mac wakes up - LED solid

Viewsonic stays in power saving mode (LED amber)

    So I have to

Power cycle Viewsonic - tap on/off button twice

Viewsonic wakes up(LED blue). All windows reappear.

    What I want to happen

    1. Put Mac to sleep - everything turns off.

    2. Tap a key/click mouse - everything turns on.

Same problem here...November 2014 mac mini, Viewsonic monitor. This monitor worked fine with my MacBook pro connected via hdmi. Now it doesn't work -- computer will wake, but no monitor...have to reboot each time. Really a pain!

Same problem here but am still under Apple Care (for first 90 dys anyway...) and they are currently investigating. Ran a couple of tests via apps that they sent to me, but am yet to hear back. I shall report when something interesting comes to light. I also contacted Philips (I have a 234E monitor) and they said this:

"Regarding the issue you have reported, it might be related to the HDMI cable you are using.

There are cables that don't have the power passtrough option.

It would be important to test with another cable, do you have that possibility?"

When I questioned them about finding out if my MAC HDMI cable had this option, he replied saying it is not easy to tell other than finding out direct form the manufacturer. Could it be this? Does the (most recent) Mac HDMI cable have a powerpass through option?!
