Q: Will an iPad 2 be upgradable to iOS 8?

I have an iPad first gen that only was upgradable to iOS 5.11.  I am thinking about getting a refurbished 2nd Gen.  Will that be upgradable to iOS 8 when it comes out this Fall, or should I look for a newer refurb gen like a 3rd or Air?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

iTunes would tell you when you synced. Or you could check "Software Update" in your iPhone Settings now and again. Or any of the Apple related blogs/sites. Apple sadly does not email the hundreds of millions of users affected.

THank you!  I just downloaded 8.1.1 on my iPad2,  i hope i did the right thing.   The update was there all along I just didn't pay attention, i guess i did not expect an update from Apple.  hope it is going to improve my iPad functionality.  But in the end, whether it does or not, i just appreciate Apple's attempt to help iPad2 and iPhone4 users.  We are the loyal customers of older releases and the potential ones of their future releases.  What we should not be is the forgotten ones.

So far so good! I am so happy, after the recent update to iOS 8.1.1 my iPad 2 seems to be back to normal. Thank you very much Apple.

The product iPad 2 has a notable track record of not performing after updating to iOS 8, observable from the volume of comments on the topic, which does not include those who have the same problem and do not comment here or visit the store.

I've kept up on the tech news reports on iOS 8 and there is no such track record evident from any segment of iOS devices. What you see here is a very tiny segment of the installed user base, barely registering as a "blip" on the radar. It's like walking into a hospital and after seeing rooms filled with sick people, and then saying, "OMG! The entire country is sick! It's an epidemic!" ... LOL ...

While there are a few here with problems, there are also those who have fixed their problems, and others who are here who have never had any problems to begin with. What we do here is like what is done at a hospital, we "attend to the sick" ... we don't wring our hands and say, "Everyone is sick!" from the few who are in the hospital ... :-) ...

First off, I didn't appreciate being called a liar after my first post in this thread.   If Apple releases a patch that explicitly addresses the issues with the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S then that means I was not a liar.  Turns out that my speculation of incompetence or planned obsolescence still stands... so which is it?

Your analogy of: the sick visiting the hospital must mean everyone is sick, is stupid and short sighted.  If the hospitals followed your logic then people with illnesses that could turn into an epidemic would in fact become one.

We need to barrage Apple with emails.   Hey Apple, when are you going to fix these very real and distressing problems with iOS 8.1.  I bought your product because I belived Apple produced a superior product- backed with excellent customer service, and the most gifted technology geniuses. ARE WE ALL WRONG?

PLEASE fix these problems.  I am extremely dissapointed and dissatisfied. We are loosing faith in Apple. I am sorry I just bought an IPhone 8.  Even as I write this post my iPad2 is "skipping" and is delayed. Oh, I'm ready to throw it in the garbage.

jenndm - I never register for forums. I'm usually a happy (and appreciative) recipient of other people's knowledge that they gained through trial and error.  However, after my ipad2 email started crashing after 8.1.1 and continues to do so in 8.1.2, I registered for this forum and sent Apple feedback through their Feedback link.  Who knows.... that feedback is likely sent to an unmonitored email inbox.  https://www.apple.com/support/feedback/

I'm still searching this Forum for a solution, but I'm coming to the conclusion that it's a problem with IOS 8.1.1 and 8.1.2.  No amount of device resets, email account deletions, and restorations will possibly solve the email app crashing problem on the iPad 2.

8.1.2 did not really help for me either.  My iPad2 still acts funny, is very slow and also crashes on occasion.   It is not at all the iPad functionality of pre IOS 8.  I have given up hoping for change and am resigned to use it with its flaws and all.  Good luck To you...

There is actually no solution for this issue.

I took my iPad2 in to my city's Apple store for repair, but it couldn't be reset; thank God they had a deal on an 1 year old used iPad Air - who two days in my purchase uploaded to iOS 8.2.1 without hassles - or I'd be without iPad.

II've upgraded mp iPad 2 to 8 and even after resetting all settings I'm left with a completely useless piece of kit. Shame on apple.

Dear Thread readers I've been having issues with my iPad 2 since the initial iOS8 release and am still battling with Apple EMIA's to resolve

I've had a Genius in the Apple Store tell me its a hardware fault (no diagnostics run)

I've even had Star Traveller give his comments views on the matter

I've had a Senior Technical Specialist via Apple Support line tell me its a software fault that the next update will remedy

I've had the same Senior Technical Specialist tell me that its a hardware fault when the update did'nt remedy the situation

I've had 20 odd days of asking the EMIA to tell me what hardware was identified as failing from the crash/panic logs I sent them

I only got a an answer to that question after cc' ing in every Apple MD who's email address I could find

I was then informed it was a failed memory module and then told it would cost £299 to repair

I questioned this and was then informed that it was actually a refurbished iPad 2 that I would be paying £299 for

For the full thread read here iPad 2 keeps crashing rebooting after ios 8 update

I'm still in the process of arguing the point with them that I don't want a refurbished iPad 2, I want mine repairing at a sensible price, not an extortionate one . .

I really do think Apple have lost their way since their 1984 advert

"Today, we celebrate the first glorious anniversary of the Information Purification Directives. We have created, for the first time in all history, a garden of pure ideology—where each worker may bloom, secure from the pests purveying contradictory truths. Our Unification of Thoughts is more powerful a weapon than any fleet or army on earth. We are one people, with one will, one resolve, one cause. Our enemies shall talk themselves to death, and we will bury them with their own confusion. We shallprevail!"

No longer shall the individual prevail . . .  it appears

FRazzm737, I let the new iOS releases wait a while as well. In case it matters, I had to replace my iPad 2 and it had 7.1.2 on it. There's a little strangeness in assorted ways but it sounds WAAAY better than iOS 8. My previous one was on iOS 7.1

I wasn't speculating, Meg. I was referring to information released publicly in the media. I was simply wondering if he had comments or opinions related to that information.
