Q: Move audio files to external drive

I purchased an external drive to store my movies and mp3s on but I don't how to set it up  so  the iTune app can read the files on G-drive. Or what files I need to move to the G-drive.

    Hi LizRuane,

    Happy Holidays!  I'm not sure from your question if you are wanting to move your iTunes library to an external drive, or if you have various mp3 and movie files on your computer that you want to move to an external drive.  So, I'll give you some basic information for both scenarios.

    The first step is to make sure your external drive is formatted for Mac.

    Before you begin to use your new external hard drive, reformat it to the Mac OS Extended file system:

     

      1. Be sure your drive is attached and mounted.
      2. If you have already written any data to the drive, back it up before proceeding to the next step.
      3. In the Finder, choose Go > Utilities. The /Applications/Utilities folder will open.
      4. Launch Disk Utility.
      5. Click the icon for your external hard drive in the sidebar on the left.

      1. Click the Erase tab along the top of the window.

      1. From the Volume Format menu, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

    1. Enter a name for the external hard drive in the Name field.
    2. Click the Erase button.

     

    If you have miscellaneous mp3 or movie files on your computer that you want to move to the external drive, you can use the Finder application.

    Copying your Files

    Use an external drive

     

    You can copy your important files to an external drive to move the files between them.

     

    1. Connect the external drive to your Mac.
    2. In the Finder, locate the external drive. If you don't see it, choose Go > Computer to see a list of all of the drives connected to this Mac.
    3. In the Finder, drag any of the files you want to move to your external drive to make a copy.

     

    If the mp3 files and movies are already in your iTunes library, you can copy the entire library to your new external drive:
