Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

When you say you called Apple, do you mean you talked to one of the "geniuses" in the store?  Either they are clueless and completely unaware of what's going on or they are told to say that about every problem that people come in with.  I think it's the latter.  That's exactly what they said when I went into the store "First time I've heard of this problem?!"  Meanwhile there was a guy about 3 feet away telling another "genius" about the exact same wifi problems.  In fact I've take previous iPhones into the store with widespread problems and they said the same thing.  This is the ultimate insult and the worst customer relations ever.  On the other hand, I've had the same experience as nazarite.  There ARE technicians gathering information and very eagerly doing so.  And I presume there are engineers working on this issue.  I haven't lost all faith in the company.......yet.  BTW, I haven't moved past 8.1.0.  I managed to get it to work somewhat reliably at home by upgrading my access point and I'm not messing with it until I see widespread "It's finally fixed" posts on here.

No issues on any Wi-Fi hotspot to date.

Last Speedtest result on an iPhone 6 running 8.1.2 was a quite respectable 21.01 Mbps down, 20.01 Mbps up, 18 ms ping.

That doesn't mean there's not an issue, but it's not universal, either.

So how is that information helpful when clearly people are having problems, and we all recognise not everyone has issues.

I Believe wifi issues are more common on older devices like iPhone 4s, somehow device is having problem to find wifi chip on iOS 8 AND newer. On iOS 7 wifi works fine so it can not be hardware problem as people in Apple store are suggesting. I can't explain how puting idevice in a fridge solves the wifi problem on iOS 8, maybe someone can elaborate this, although it would be nice to see propper fix

Thanks for your speed info Mr. Kucharski.  If nothing else, now maybe we have proof someone from Apple is reading the thread.  Meanwhile, I'll keep hard resetting my phone every morning as that's the only way to restore any connectivity (wifi or cellular).  Then I wait and see how long I get to use my wireless until I either have to disable it because it's so slow or it just drops the connection for me anyways.

So I was having the same problems with wifi on my new iphone 6 and iPad Air 2.  Turned off iCloud and at least I can now use Messages, Twitter, Gmail.  Maybe another issue, but I haven't been able to connect via wifi for 2 days and intermittent problems since I downloaded 8.1.2.  I'm not ready to throw the baby out with the Apple bathwater, but I hope that this all gets fixed. Seems like everyone at Apple is working overtime on this.  Thanks from all of us, but this should not happen.  That's why it's called a Beta version, so that the errors get worked out ahead of time, at least the big ones, and most of them.

Still my 4s loses the wifi connection. My phone is running ios 8.1.2 I also noticed that the phone is getting too hot switching between wifi and 3G trying to find connection for a long time . this all started with ios8 and not before. I have tried all the solutions mentioned in this discussion with no luk.

Same here. My iPhone 4s has the same problem. On iOS 7 wifi is just fine, now on iOS 8 my wifi turned greyed out Like there device has no wifi inside, so I put the phone in zipped plastic bag in a freezer for 5 minutes and wifi and bluetooth are working fine. Wifi is lost when phone start to heat, solution that I found usefull to keep wifi is to turn it off when not using Device.  Just to set things straight, there is no hardware problem since this problem (wifi, bluetooth lost, heating) is not present on iOS 7, only on iOS 8. The fridge fix is not permanent, it last for about 14-20 days AND then you have to repeat the process. I was monitoring how long will this work.  So, I would like to hear why putting device in low temperature fix the issue. As I could see iphone 4s users are the most inffected with wifi and bluetooth lost/greyed out problem. I hope that the new update will fix wifi on older devices.

I've seen a lot of dubious correlations on how to resolve the iOS 8.x Wi-Fi issue on this thread, but I nominate you sir as the winner of the most dubious correlation ever!  Congratulations... you really outdid yourself and others!

Since this thread has become fairly quiet and I, for one, am no longer having a prob with my iPhone 6 and Wi-Fi, I'm assuming iOS 8.1.2 has resolved the issue for the vast majority of customers.  I'm not sure what your config is or what router you  have, but you should at least have a router that can supports 802.11n and WPA2, and configure it appropriately.  Please let us know what your router config is and what brand of refrigerator you have.

Your sence of humor is like my wifi, it's grayed out. Yes I have last update from apple, new router, although I don't know what my router has to do with my wifi Icon not being recognized on a phone, it is not like I have bad signal.  I am happy to hear that last update fixed iPhone 6 wifi issue, in my case everything remains the same, I have tried everything suggested on this site.

As for the fridge goes I didn't invent this, this was frankly the last cry for help and the only one that actually works. Btw. Fridge is not Made By Apple, but it will do a trick.

I have bought an iPhone 5 a week ago and had to install the IOS 8.1.2 version. At the installation of the device, WiFi worked fine, but ever since it was installed it completely lost every WiFi capability it had. Since then, I have done the next things:

    - I bought a new router, installed it in the way Apple advises, but this didn't work.
    - I tried all the temporary fixes Google gives you, none of them working.

    - I went to see an "iPhone specialist". He told he iPhone's signal is specified on American routers. European (Dutch, in my case) routers, are more "used to" Android devices than iOS devices. I doubt this is the awnser.

So, neither Google nor a "specialist" could give me the right advice. So I reset my iPhone (hard way, DFU mode) and tried to fix it this way. It worked for an hour, but then it failed again.

I am having different errors, "not able to connect" or "incorrect password (being 110% sure I am using the right one) ", both are problems I am facing.

This morning, I "discovered" something remarkable. I was home alone and my iPhone was the only device that tried to use the WiFi. My WiFi connection was perfect, high speed, no errors, as you should expect from an Apple device. But ever since my sisters entered the building and linked their devices (Android) to the WiFi. Poof! Gone. No more WiFi for the rest of the day. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the problems, but I am glad I am not the only one here that has the problems. It's clear that the fault is in the software. Let's hope they get their sh*t together, I am not paying loads of money for devices that simply don't work...

    Poof! Gone.

That's consistent with this problem.  The ios is getting confused in some wifi battle.

Do you still have your old wifi router?  Set it up so you are the only one using it.  Be sure to place on a different band. This is only a guess of what to try.

Here is the best description I have seen of the problem.

PS.  Could your sister's android device be "lost"?  >>> Just joking of course <<<

I have tried Charles, but it won't work. The iPhone's WiFi connection is so inconsistent. Some times, when everybody is using the WiFi, it works perfect, sometimes it doesn't. I think I will just have to wait until Apple comes with a fix update. A friend of mine's iPhone 5 that's still running iOS 7 hasn't had any problems with our WiFi.

I bought a 32gb iPad air for my partner on saturday and it too has displayed the same symptoms described here. I tried rebooting both the tablet and my BT hub 5. Neither of these helped at all. The iPad appeared to only keep the connection for a minute or so and it wasn't just internet access - I logged in to the hub web page and this too failed within a minute. I then tried hunting around the advanced settings of the hub and eventually decided to switch off the auto channel selection. We've not had any problems for  two days now. It looks to me that the iPad can't cope with the hub switching WiFi channels.

I lost my wifi today after updating to 8.1.2.  Fixed by putting the iPad into static address mode. Not a good solution for mobility but works when at home. I suspect the new soiftware is rejected a good DHCP response and thrashing around the IP space.
