Nov 27, 2014 8:04 AM in response to engiadinaby jpgeo,ok, so i had this problem back in 10.9 (blank screens on boot; PLUS, also, random blank screens on both at once, and no chance to wake up and continue), and now they just reappeared in yosemite 10.10.1. Mac Pro mid 2010, ATI radeon H5870 connected to a 30" Cinema HD, as well as a philips cheapo monitor with adapter. had to force shutdown...a simple parameter ram reset did NOT work; had to disconnect the philips monitor before the problem went away...seems we have regressed since the 10.10.0 to 10.10.0 update. If someone can recommend a fix, that is greatly appreciated-i really miss the second monitor.

Dec 3, 2014 11:23 AM in response to mandy1973by Kemal-abi,guys i have the same problem:
macbook pro mid 2012
13 inch
after update to 10.10.1 my screen went black.
if i put a flashlight to the screen i can see everything.
the backlight doesn't work at all.
i don't think this is a coincidence. this has something to do with the update.
i went to a apple store and told them about the problem and asked for advice.
they said : " the backlight must be broken, you must replaced it and it costs about €400.-.."
i have tried several solutions what i could find on the internet but none work.
2 or 3 reset tricks.
swapping and installing to another hdd.
swapping memory.
please some one help me..

Dec 4, 2014 5:47 AM in response to abstertby a.c.hansonjr,Thank you very much.
I never knew about the single user boot command so it's double thanks!
It wasn't until I deleted the /private/var/.AppleUpgrade file that I was actually able to boot. Just deleting the loginwindow plist didn't work for me.
For those trying these instructions, you may not have a /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist file as mine did not.
Thanks again!

Dec 6, 2014 6:54 AM in response to abstertby dmtrhts,Thank you abstert. Your suggestion got me one step further, now I get login screen instead of black screen, but I cannot pass this login screen. The password is correct. But it simply reloads the login screen after spinning the wheel.
Do you have any further suggestions?

Dec 6, 2014 7:44 AM in response to dmtrhtsby jimmantione,I get a black screen on boot up on my macbook pro mid 2012, and no curser showing either. Computer is running, hard drive is booting up, key board lights are on, but screen is black. I wait a few minutes for it to go to sleep. Once i awake it from sleep the log on screen appears. This has been happening for about 3 days which is when i installed the yosemite update 10.10.1. Not sure if its related or not.

Dec 8, 2014 6:31 AM in response to mandy1973by aminasadi,Try this, seemed to work for me:
use 'pmset -g' to see the 'before' values in case you want to get back to them.
Then set these values to zero:sudo pmset -a standby 0
sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0 -

Dec 15, 2014 2:40 PM in response to Kemal-abiby abstert,Yes you are right...this is not random.
The update fails to remove/update the login.plist file which is why the fix is to remove it.

Hello Naanwar,
This error means that your hard drive is failing and you should backup your data before it is all lost. I would purchase a replacement drive and begin migrating your data over.
For the "rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist" you should get no response as that file should exist and have been deleted. Can you confirm?

Dec 29, 2014 6:49 AM in response to nvnranby Jersey.Shore,I have an Early 2008 MacBook Pro also. When I installed Yosemite it booted as far as showing my wallpaper image without the Dock, Mouse, or Apple bar up top (Apple bar was black).
After two days of boot variations, I found that my display has four (4) "internal" displays (enough pixels for Retina on a Non-Retina MacBook). I tried to get the display to boot with mirroring on (so the four internal displays would be the same) with no luck.
In the end, I boot, and can't see any controls until i short-cut mirroring on: CRTL + F1. Then all the screen elements appear.
How I discovered the issue was random: I moved the mouse unseen to the fourth right-most screen (actual) in frustration. Then I could click the black apple bar area and it appears, launch System Preferences > Display, then Gather, select the main display dialog (four internal display dialogs appear), click arrange, then mirror!
Good Luck!
