Q: How to stop iTunes repeatedly downloading a deleted song

Hello!
In error, I purchased a song via my Apple TV recently, and very soon afterwards the song appeared in my iTunes library on my mac.

I do not want the song, and deleted the song from the iTunes media folder by moving it into trash. The trash was then emptied.

Every day I open iTunes, I can see that the song has been downloaded again automatically by iTunes....and then I delete it. The song no longer appears in my list of purchased songs in my iTunes store account. I do not want the song, and Apple refunded the purchase price of the track.

Could somebody please share a way that I can permanently stop the song from being automatically downloaded after I delete it?
Thanks,

James

    Hi FIT JIM,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you accidentally purchased a song and after deleting, it keeps automatically downloading to your iTunes library. It sounds as if Automatic Downloads in iTunes on your computer may be enabled and causing the repeated downloads. To isolate, I would suggest disabling Music Automatic Downloads. Please refer to the attached article for information on completing this process.

Enable Automatic Downloads - Apple Support

Music, Movies, TV Shows, and Apps

    1. Open iTunes.
    2. If you haven't authorized your computer, choose Store > Authorize This Computer.
    3. Open the iTunes Store Preferences:
    4. Select the content that you want to automatically download. If you can't select these options, you need to sign in to the iTunes Store with your Apple ID.

    Happy holidays,

    Joe

If you do not wish to disable all automatic downloads you may find hiding a single item may work better for you.

    Hi there Joe,

Many thanks for responding to my inquiry.
The automatic downloads check box for music was unchecked already.ave just

Having just opened iTunes (to check the iTunes' preferences), I can see that the song has not downloaded today (yet).
I appreciate your offer of help.

    Happy holidays to you too!

    Hi Limnos,

I appreciate you also reaching out to me with your idea of hiding the track. Hiding the track might work if the track showed up as a purchase (I have looked in my Purchased Music part of the iTunes store, and the track doesn't show up there). Therefore there is no track that I can hide. It is as if this track is a 'ghost in the computer,' so to speak, and cannot be found by looking in the regular places (iTunes store account and iTunes folders on my Mac).

    Thanks for your suggestion!

    James
