Q: Resetting iPad after saving iBooks and music

HI

i I have an iPad 2 that's gotten slow after all updates

i wish to reset it completely after saving ONLY thef  iBooks and music on that ipad. Nothing else matters , actually I wish to deleTe all other junk

i have a laptop, I've installed iTunes on it, I have a cable to connect the iPad to that laptop and remember my Apple id

i regularly backup my iPhone to that same laptop, but I guess Apple is smart enough to know the difference

Whats The best way to go about resetting the iPad 2

Yes, iTunes will know the difference between the two devices, so you don't have to worry about that. If you sync the phone then you know the basics.

If the music and books were purchased from iTunes and the iBooks Stores, they can be downloaded again anyway, even if you erase the iPad and start over. Assuming that the books and music are still available in the stores, you will be able to download them again, that is. However, I am not suggesting that you erase the device just yet.

This is how I would do it. Transfer all purchases from the iPad into iTunes backup the iPad, restore to factory settings, then restore the backup. See how that goes for a while before you totally erase everything and start all over again.

If you prefer, you can totally erase the iPad and then download all of your purchased content again. Only iTunes or any Apple purchased content can be download again. Read these first.

Music and books are not stored in the backup. They are stored in iTunes. The music and books would have to be transfered into iTunes so that you could sync them back again. You would probably need a third party app in order to transfer the music into iTunes or you would have to download it again on your computer, import it into iTunes so that it can sync back, or download it all again directly on the device.

The backup contains all app data and all device settings. You cannot restore selective content to the device. If you restore the backup, it's all or nothing. Books and PDF files should be able to be transferred into iTunes no matter where they came from using the transfer purchases feature. If they don't transfer into iTunes, you would have to download them again as well. ITunes doesn't work automatically with content that did not come from Apple/iTunes or any of their iStores.

    CCouple of points I notice

    1. Safari is slower than it was before the restore !! Don't knoe if it's a temporary catch / chache Thingy

    2. The iPad isnt charging when connected to the laptop using a cable

Reset and Restored iPad charges when connected to the mains , I mean power socket directly ,the problemis only when wits connected to the computer thru USB . ( the cable is Apple original cable !! And worked till few hours ago, meaning before reset  and restore )

iI'll update this post with more experiences as we go by

    thanks for your replies

    regards

When you restored and updated the iOS, that might be what caused the charging issue. With this newest iOS, the iPad may need more power in order to charge, and your computer might not be supplying enough power through the USB ports. Maybe that will resolve itself, but it's also possible that you will not be able to charge it now using the computer and you may have to plug into the mains/wall socket using the supplied power adopter. Apple recommends using the power adapter anyway and it is the fastest most efficient way to recharge the device.

IF you want to delete apps, the hold down on the icon method is OK, but you can also go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Manage Storage and tap on the app that you want to delete and you can delete it in the next screen.

Try this for the problem with Safari. Clear Safari, close it completely and reset/reboot your iPad. No data is lost with this type of reset. It is very much like rebooting your computer.

Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website Data

Now close Safari. In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to Safari, then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.

Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

    1. I haven't figured out the charging issue . I had updated to latest iOS before complete reset anD restore, so I doubt if this new charging issue is anything normal I.e. Anything to do with new iOS needing more power . It may be something I haven't quite figured out . I will use the mains + cable as you suggested . Luckily , I'm not traveling much

    2. I shut down safari, removed all history and content from safari, shut down iPad and restarted iPad. not much improvement in speed !! Will see ...will see what happens and keep you updated

    3. Will delete apps using your method / idea

    4. Thanks a ton for all the support ... People like you make such support communities worth visiting ....way to go ....way to go

    Regards

ps : safari slowing seems to be affecting spell check ... ?? Or am I day dreaming ?

I'm  happy to hear that you have gotten most of your content back. I assumed that the books and PDF files would not be a problem, it was the non-iTunes music that I was concerned about. It sounds like maybe you had imported the music to iTunes at some point and you were and able to sync it back. It doesn't matter why it worked, it just matters that it did work,

You have an iPad 2 which is the oldest device that can run iOS 8 and the iOS can may be taxing the limited resources on the iPad 2. If you are using your iPad to participate here in the community, the Jive Software that runs the ASC is causing some of your problems. You might see all sorts of bizarre issues with double caps, weird auto correct, spell check and so on, so its not just your iPad, it's the Jive Software that Apple uses here.

Thanks you you for the very kind words. This is a great support community. We all help each other to the best of our abilities.I have learned some amazing stuff from people that have no "dots" at all under their avatars. The level doesn't matter as long as the knowledge is there.
