Q: Boot Camp on iMac Retina 5K?

I think that Apple states that Windows may be installed on the Retina 5K, but will there be a problem with drivers?

More importantly, will Windows drivers be in conflict with Apple's proprietary Timing Controller they've announced for this computer?

I have the exact same question. I have found several posts by people stating they could install AMD drivers on bootcamp, but I am not able to do it.  I have tried both the latest 14.9 and beta 14.11 packages, and it only wants to install the Install Manager and the HDMI drivers.  I keep seeing the following.

    1. Using either the Express or Custom setup
    2. It says "detecting hardware"
    3. It appears to Install the Install Manager and HDMI drivers
    4. Goes to "Finish Screen"
    5. Click "Finish"
    6. No errors, and the error log does not indicate any issues
    7. No new CCC and no new drivers

BTW - the bootcamp drivers are 14.20.xxxx - NOT 14.200.xxxx.  When I select "Check for Updates" through CCC, it tells me:

    • Current Version: 14.20.1002.1002-1407xxx
    • Available Version: 14.201.1008-1408xxx

Selecting "Download now" does the download, then executes the driver install with the exact same result as above.

I even tried removing the AMD drivers, then installing, but it refuses to install or load newer drivers. If you remove the AMD drivers, you wind up with the Windows Generic Display driver.  I had to go back to the thumb drive and go into the bootcamp folder and re-install the AMD drivers to get any real support.

It doesn't look like Mantle is supported by this driver either.

I'd like to know if these guys are saying "it just works" when they install, OR if they are doing something "extra" to install later AMD drivers.

AMD released a new driver that supports 5K monitors.

This is discussed in the following article:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-catalyst-omega-radeon-driver,28155.html

Can you confirm that this new driver give native 5K resolution in Windows 8.1

JackFrost: I tried it, won't work.

"We are unable to find a driver for your system. No supported AMD hardware was detected."

This happens when I try to install the Omega driver.

@fredz85 - I have encountered the exact same thing. Spent about 30 minutes in apple chat with a tech support representative and he referred me to AMD. I posted the question to them and got the following notation from the Catalyst Omega Driver documentation - "This driver is not intended for use on AMD products running in Apple Boot Camp platforms. Users of these platforms should contact their manufacturer for driver support."

I pointed out to them that AMD is the manufacturer of the graphics in these machines and that on their website there is a mechanism to support AMD graphics in Bootcamp. For instance, in the AMD drivers and download center you can manually select your driver by going under MAC Graphics you can select Apple Bootcamp. But this only contains the older Catalyst drivers.

I was hoping that this just means that the Catalyst Omega driver is still under development and that providing some reassurance of ongoing efforts and a timeline would have been nice but I only got a cold reply that the release NOTES stipulate no support for the Bootcamp environment.

Anyone else have luck in figuring out what is happening? Right about now I feel in between Apple and AMD both saying its in the other's wheelhouse.

Not happy with the support of either company at the moment.

@TrocidaNDH - I am with you on this, but I think it's a lost cause. Apple uses non-stock AMD cards and has never said that it would support 5K natively on Windows. Moreover, the current drivers work fine for me, the resolution is already huge and without scaling it's unmanageable. I know pure 5K would be great, but I don't think it'll happen soon.

Agreed. But since the driver has already been created by AMD it shouldn't be that difficult to adapt to the Boot camp platform

Very curious about solution to driver issue, as I have 27" iMac Retina 5K with 4.0 GHz processor and maxed out at 32 GB RAM (purchased after market from Crucial due to hi Apple pricing), and the R295X card. Great thread ongoing here and hoping more information or support develops soon.

    Hi everyone,

I have the basic 5k iMac with the x290 GPU.

I can install Windows 8.1 fine with Boot Camp, everything works, except the GPU which gives a code 43 error.

I have tried all available drivers and re-installing Windows. Is anyone else having this problem or found a solution?

    David

There is no solution.  The Apple support I spoke with told me to take the issue up with Microsoft.  (really Apple?)

The community as a whole has yet to identify why some do and some don't have this problem.  I've been trying to solve this problem since product release and have given up.  I've tried Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.  I've tried the Bootcamp drivers in every configuration I can think of.  I've tried every version of the AMD drivers from their support page that has been released since February.  I've reconfigured the .ini files in the driver package, and recompiled the driver package.  Nothing works.

The next best solution is to use Parallels.  (www.parallels.com)  It required a bunch of hackery I wanted to avoid for my problem. It is an inelegant solution, but it's the only thing I can come up with.  Also, if your application explicitly looks for specific 3D acceleration hardware it will fail, and this isn't the solution you want.  Otherwise it benchmarks reasonably well in 3DMark and the like, and it's nifty to have Windows programs running along side all of my continuity stuff.

I've managed to get the card to work!

The last thing I tried was installing an old version of Windows 7 I had lying around. When it came to the Boot Camp drivers install, I cancelled it and installed the ATI drivers manually. The card worked fine. I then went on to install all the other Boot Camp drivers.

I don't know whether it was Windows 7 or installing the ATI drivers first that did the trick, but it's working like a charm!

Jumpin Jesus on a Pogo-stick!  I had to download an .iso from DigitalRiver, and now i need to buy a Windows 7 license, but this solved my problem.  The code 43 error is no longer present, and the video hardware appears to be functional.  I have't had time to install my CAD software yet for complete testing, but so far this looks good.

Thank you David for your response.  It was exactly what I needed.

I tried that and still nothing.   I can at least get past the frozen screen where it cannot detect drivers.   But now installation stops at 65% expanding Windows and just freezes. I have a genuine copy of windows and a 5K iMac.  No idea why this is so hard

Would you guys mind telling us which driver you used and from where, and which gfx card configuration you have (the stock one or the upgraded option?)

I'm planning to go this route....

Tried the driver by the link on my iMac 5K but the 3.8K issue persists.
