Q: We have an early 2008 imac and we realize it is not long for this world but we would like to get a few more months out of it until we can afford a newer one. Can we put in a larger hard drive and add some memory?

Would it be worthwhile to put in a larger hard drive and boost the memory on our early 2008 iMac? We realize it is on borrowed time but we would like to squeeze a little more time out of it.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

You have some OS X "garbageware"/"crapware" installed on that MacBook.

You have MacKeeper on your system which is total garbage software.

    GET RID OF IT!!

You, also, have the Genieo adware/malware installed and needs to be properly uninstallled.

Ditch ALL Googlewares. They are ALL a serious resource hog on the OS X system.

If you do not like Apple's Safari web browser, download, install and try Mozilla FireFox, instead.

The current, up-to-date version of FireFox is fully compatible with OS X and is regularly updated by the great developers of the Mozilla group.

I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine, regularly and use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine.

Your MacBook has a high memory page out amount.

I suggest installing more RAM into your MacBook, too!

Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

Thanks for that diagnosis, I have been wanting to get away from google for a while. I already have firefox installed, and I switched from them to google chrome, seemed like a good idea at the time. When you say get rid of all googleware, I suppose that means my gmail accounts, as well. I guess I can go back to yahoo or activate my suddenlink account. Your thoughts? Once again, thank you for your patience and I apologize for taking up so much of your time.

No Problem. That is why I and many more of us volunteer to be here.

To try and help our fellow Mac/Apple product users.

    You can certainly keep Gmail.

I was referring to both Google Chrome and Google Drive and any other Google software that has to be installled directly on a Mac.

You've installed some serious malware on your Mac:  MacKeeper.  Read this user tip and uninstall it ASAP: Do not install MacKeeper.

You also have some Adware installed, genieo.   This article at TheSafeMac.com describes it and provides an app to  remove it: Genieo adware causing Safari crashes.
