Is there a workaround or alternative driver that will allow use of this printer?
Yes. You can download and install the Gutenprint v5.2.9 driver suite which still has support for your old iP5000.

Mar 1, 2014 11:17 AM in response to KitKatAKby LorenzoDD,I had the same problem and Gutenprint didn't work for me.
I have found another solution though: just download the driver from the Canon website for OS X 10.6. I'm using 10.7 and it works fine for me. Best of luck.

Mar 7, 2014 6:19 AM in response to LorenzoDDby gnomen,And I have the same problem. Gutenprint does not work for me either.
I downloaded the driver from Canon website and installed it, but still OSX does not find it and directs me to Gutenprint instead. Not sure how to get around it.
I am using Mavericks (OSX 10.9.2). On my old iMac the Canon driver has worked just fine through successive OS upgrades. On my new iMac the install of the Canon driver will not 'take'.
Would really like to hear some suggestions. This is driving me nuts!
Thanks

Mar 12, 2014 7:49 AM in response to KitKatAKby gnomen,After making this post I decided to use Apple Support which is free for the first 90 days from the purchase of the new iMac. The support advisor directed me to this site:
Where we searched for and installed the appropriate driver. Note that the driver (mcpd-mac-ip5000-10_51_2-ea11.dmg) was neither the one from the Canon website nor the Gutenprint as directed by the OSX printer installation program and other advisors. I can confirm it works perfectly well for all printer functions that I use or have ever used with the iP5000.
I list the site here for any others who have driver problems, since it worked for me.

Oct 12, 2014 5:21 AM in response to gnomenby Eivind Arnstein Johansen,I can confirm that this driver also works perfectly with Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite (public preview 5).

Dec 23, 2014 6:08 AM in response to Eivind Arnstein Johansenby homer1968,Hello,
is it possible that it doesn't work with OS X 10.10.1?
During trying to connect the printer, I can see the driver which was recommended by gnome in my downloads. But its letters are light-grey and i can't choose the file.
Could anyone help me?
(Sorry for my bad English)
Thanks.

Aug 6, 2016 3:10 PM in response to KitKatAKby Peter Dromgoole1,I followed gnomes instructions (having just installed El Capitan OS10.10) but can't seem to get any printing to happen - it just crashes when I try to print! Any suggestions (by the way where is the bit of software I just loaded and what is it called!)

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
Any devices that previously appeared in your Printer List and Fax List will need to be added again after resetting the printing system.
Resetting the printing system in Mac OS X 10.5.x+++
- To use the Reset Printing System feature in Mac OS X 10.5.x, follow these steps:
- Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
- Choose Print & Fax from the View menu.
- Control-click on list of printers on the left side of the window, then choose "Reset printing system" from the contextual menu. If you don't see a list of printers, Control-click on the text "Click + to add a printer or fax" and select "Reset printing system..."
As an alternative, if you currently have one or more printers listed, you can Option-click the "-" (Remove printer) button.
