Dec 24, 2014 1:31 AM in response to Eddichowby Terence Devlin,Okay. But before anyone can help they'll need to give us a rather more useful description of the problem than 'doesn't work'...
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

Dec 24, 2014 1:50 AM in response to Eddichowby léonie,iPhoto 8.1.2 doesn't work after reinstalled OS 10.6.8?
And why did you reinstall MacOS X 10.6.8? was that a downgrade from a newer version or a trouble shooting measure?

Dec 24, 2014 7:03 AM in response to Terence Devlinby Eddichow,Thank you for your reply. The reason I reinstalled the OS because in the utility they had detected some problems in my OS and they recommended the OS to be reinstalled. After that when I tried to start the iPhoto, an error message appeared on the screen:
"iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X."
Hope you can help me to sort out this problem. Thank you.

Dec 24, 2014 7:29 AM in response to Eddichowby Terence Devlin,To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

That message is usually appearing together with a crash log that will be sent to Apple.
Could you post the first 50 lines of this crash log? Copy and paste it from the window into your answer.
Edit: Try Terence Devlin's recommendation first

Dec 24, 2014 1:46 PM in response to Terence Devlinby GShelton2014,Terence,
I have the same symptom as Eddichow; iPhoto will not open and gives the same error message ("Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X.....")--as does Mail. (On another note, Launchpad and Notes, when attempting to open, give a me a, "...you have 10.6.8... [xyz] requires 10.7 or later." Although, I do not use Launchpad or Notes, it would be nice to have all applications working again.)
I have tried your three-step process to reinstalling iPhoto (using step "2b" as I am running 10.6.8) with no luck.
Although, I receive the same error message as Eddichow when attempting to open iPhoto (or Mail), the story behind my computer's issue is different.
Hardware story: I'm on a MacBook Pro, mid 2009 (13"), running 10.6.8. My computer had a plethora or issues several months ago--eventually not booting--and I left it alone for a couple months while using a friend's computer in the interim. Eventually I had my laptop diagnosed as a having a bad HD. I replaced it myself (while upgrading to a Western Digital, 7200 rpm/more GBs hard drive) to save myself cash. I had to troubleshoot while installing and erasing new HD and ended up replacing the HD cable--then my computer was up and running (thus, although I have not checked experimentally, my old HD may actually have been OK all along).
Software story: I reinstalled 10.6 (from disc) then 10.6.8 (from another disc). Then restored using the most recent Time Machine backup prior to my computer initially "biting the dust"--TM backup from external HD. If you've read all this, you are now caught up. My computer boots like a charm, Firefox works, Microsoft Office applications work, even iTunes works. But my precious iPhoto, Mail, and a couple other applications will not cooperate.
Back to your iPhoto install: I have followed your steps through twice (each time removing the receipts files and iPhoto app) while reinstalling using a disc copy of iLife '09.
Any thoughts, questions, clarifications?
Thanks,
Glenn

Dec 24, 2014 2:05 PM in response to léonieby GShelton2014,Leonie,
I have posted my story/iPhoto issue on this thread in reply to Terence's comments.
If you are also able to help me/point me in the right direction, that would be great!
Best,
Glenn
[Important?? --> Note also, when I followed Terence's instructions the second time through, I got rid of two copies of iPhoto--my upgraded copy (8.1.2) from before I had any issues with my computer (>6 months ago) and a non-upgraded iLife '09 copy (8.1) copy. After following Terence's instructions through the second time, I have a single 8.1 copy of iPhoto from which I get the Problem Report below.]
Here is my "Problem Report for iPhoto" (note that I did not copy the hundreds of lines below "Binary Images"):

Dec 24, 2014 5:54 PM in response to Terence Devlinby GShelton2014,Terence,
Is there something I should do differently this time? Or will re-installing a second time simply increase the chances of "things working themselves out"?
(I have the original Snow Leopard disc and a 10.6.8 disc).
Best,
Glenn

Thanks, much.

Dec 24, 2014 9:37 PM in response to GShelton2014by léonie,There are parts missing from your system library, see:
Dyld Error Message:
Symbol not found: _NSApplicationDidChangeFocusedUIElementNotification
Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/RemoteViewServices.framework/Versions/A/Remot eViewServices
Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/AppKit

Something must have corrupted the system, perhaps a third party application you installed, that is not longer compatible with your system.
Reinstall the system from the original installer disk on top of your current installation. Don't wipe the drive.
See this support document: Mac OS X 10.6: Reinstalling Mac OS X
Also, after re-installing OS, do I need to (re)restore from Time Machine?
No, if you do not erase your files before reinstalling. But make a backup, before you reinstall, just in case.

Dec 24, 2014 10:30 PM in response to léonieby GShelton2014,Thank you all for your prompt replies.
I have brought my system back up to 10.6.8 (10.6 disc, 10.6.3 disc, plus Software Updates' 10.6.8), installed software updates, and have had no luck with iPhoto or Mail (in other words, I'm back to ground zero).
I have not tried re-installing iPhoto via my iLife disc, deleting .pkg files, etc., as it seems futile.
Is there a way to move files around so that, when opening iPhoto, the computer looks in the right place? (This question in reference to the Dyld Error Message below and Leonie's thoughts)
In any case, what is my next step?
Thanks,
-G

Dec 24, 2014 10:43 PM in response to GShelton2014by Terence Devlin,It's the same crash alright.
Now, moving files around won't fix this.
The OS supplies a lot of background material which the applications look for to run. What's happening here is that when these apps look for this dependency the can't find it and so can't run.
I'd post this over on the 10.6 forum, including the crash log, and the fact that you've reinstalled already, see if anyone over there can point you in a direction.
