Q: Why has Safari 8 in Yosemite become painfully slow

Why has Safari 8 in Yosemite become painfully slow in spite of having cleared cache and history?  After entering an URL it starts loading then pauses for quite some time. Often get coloured beach ball when changing to other tabs where the page that was already loaded is blank and starts to reload.

Go step by step by step and test.

    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.

Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.

        Restart the computer.

        Start up in Safe Mode.

        http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204

    2. Delete Caches.db

Close all windows and quit all applications.

Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

        Select "Library" from the dropdown.

        Library > Caches > com.apple.Safari > Caches.db

Right click the Caches.db file and select "Move To Trash.

        Close windows and relaunch Safari.

    3. Delete Cookies

Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:

        Click “Remove All Website Data”.

    4. Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.

Turn on those one by one and test.

The following are all things that can slow your browser and your computer:

    1) Are you running any anti-virus/internet security applications?

    2) Are you running any "cleaning/tune-up/optimizations" applications?

    3) Any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading software, or software gained from such sites?

    4) Any third-party disk backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive?

    5) Any online backup scheme other than iCloud (Carbonite; GoogleDrive; MS One Drive)?

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES â–¹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View â–¹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

First thanks for these replies. I have done everything Dominic suggested, to the letter, and on Allan's' notes I only use little snitch and Time Machine.

After start up the problem remains e.g. iCloud takes 30 secs to open from Top Sites icon, and Mail crashed so from information from the console as suggested by Linc Ii seem to have a bigger problems than Safari, but must admit I don't understand a lot of what I'm reading there. I have tried to copy and paste the information at the bottom end of messages and hope that's what's needed, here goes, and thanks again:-

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Thanks Linc. hoping I've done all correctly i get these results

As guest, same problem with Safari, e.g. 33 seconds to open a page that on the iPad2 takes 2,5 seconds.

After restart normal and then logging in I note that it takes a very long time to settle down (e.g. Mail,  Excel and others not responding) then retried safari to same page as in guest, now took 25 seconds.

Basically the problem with Safari is the same,  in safe mode, as guest and in normal  mode, the pages that take 2-5 secs to load on the iPad take anything from 25 - 38 secs on the mini. As to the exact time, it happens all the time. I have tried alternative wifi links, no change.

I see that this pops up repeatedly, in spite of having deleted both aps.

That strongly suggests to me that Eltima SyncMate is your problem. It would fall under either my #4 or #5 in my list of questions previously posted.

Temporarily disable it and test--see if anything changes.

Start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.

Test. After testing, restart as usual and post the results.

I have now removed Dropbox, SyncMate, Team viewer and Kies, I don’t know if I should dump LitlleSnitch as well. Safari is still using around 30 secs to open any page. Even logging out from this community takes at least 35 secs.

I think I will simply have to reinstall the OS as nothing I have done up to now has changed anything. Maybe tomorrow.

    and thanks for helping

Hi Linc, yes I carried out the "recovery mode with fresh Safari" test and Safari still using around 30 secs to open any page. Even logging out from this community takes at least 35 secs, so I have now reinstalled Yosemite from recovery mode but Safari still takes her 30 seconds. She starts then pauses 5 secs continues then pauses say 28 secs before getting on with it to a total of 35 secs.

I opened http://www.cebanatural.com/mobile/logoff.php/sessID/a08t6ml5jdtlvsk5fs070rameeei 98qt simultaneously in safari and Firefox and firefox opened within 4 second, safari 30.

As Safari works fine on iPad I would like to be able to use it on the Mini. All network data is the same on both.

PS first time I tried to post this I got this error message "User 'Grayn280' is banned from posting content" and couldn't post!!

None of the software installed on the computer has anything at all to do with the problem. That much is certain. If you connect to the router via Wi-Fi, please connect with Ethernet, turn off Wi-Fi, and test.

Hi Linc, thank you. I moved the mini to the sitting room and connected ethernet, bingo AOK. I then dumped the wifi connection and set up a new one, retested and same old result , up to 30 secs again. so wifi is slower but why does the iPad work and not the latest Mini. I just don't understand. Ah well I will just have to drill holes through concrete walls and run a cable to the office, unless there is an alternative, I can't take the 30 sec. wait
