Q: import photos to iphoto from folder and sync with ipod

problem: itunes won't sync my photos onto my ipod from a new iphoto library

i take pictures on my ipod and import them to iphoto, photoshop elements organizer 12, and dropbox. i wanted a way to go through years of photos and delete the ones i didn't want without having to do that in four different places

1. i deleted the unwanted photos in the masters folder on my mac

2. imported that folder into a new library on iphoto using  file>switch to library, created a new one, then file>import to library

3. about half of the photos had the wrong date- they all had the same one, i don't know why. so i adjusted the dates and split the events how they were supposed to be

4. imported them to elements organizer from iphoto and copied the masters folder to dropbox

everything else worked except syncing photos with my ipod:

when i plugged it in, under the ipod tab iphoto showed the pictures in the new library as already imported and the ones i had deleted in the masters folder as not imported yet.

i was going to delete the camera roll off of my ipod but first i checked to make sure i could put pictures back onto my ipod and thats where i found the problem.

i tested it by deleting one event of pictures off of my ipod and syncing it back on but it didn't show up on my ipod.

i've tried deleting the ipod photo cache and i don't think it created a new one, at least not in the new library

mac: Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013  OS X Yosemite 10.10.1

iphoto: 9.6

ipod: 5th generation  8.1.2

    1. Pick one horse and ride it. Do not try and use Elements Organiser, iPhoto and DropBox to do the same job. It's like having three address books and then wondering why you get glitches. That workflow is unnecessarily complex. Seriously, pick one if these tools and use it only.

    2. It's easy to tell if there's an iPod cache in the Library package - just look.

i use elements because its easy to edit in photoshop and dropbox to backup, and i got what i wanted as far as deleting what needed to be for those.

i have checked the library package and there isn't an ipod cache in it,

is there a way to choose where the cache goes?

    thank you for your reply

The iPod Photo Cache folder will be in fixed places, depending where you sync from:

i just tried syncing it again and it synced 2 out of 10 photos from the event to my ipod that i had deleted from my ipod camera roll. i searched ipod photo cache and it isn't anywhere in finder

i've seen a lot of articles about deleting photo cache but i don't know how to get it to recreate it

i use elements because its easy to edit in photoshop and dropbox to backup

Elements is an excellent editor, but you don't need to use the Organiser. iPhoto can do that job:

You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

That's one layer of complexity removed.

You can't back up an iPhoto Library to Dropbox... So what exactly are you backing up there?

thank you for the suggestion, i'll definitely do that.

for dropbox i had copied the masters folder to it to save the pictures i already have there. for new pictures dropbox can save camera uploads automatically when the ipod is plugged in

so from here if there is a way that i don't know of to create a cache for the new iphoto library, i'll do that.

if there isn't, then i'll go back to the old library but that means hours to delete pictures and sort all of the events and dates that were wrong.

This may be of interest to you:

Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.

1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.

    iPPSeditor.PNG

2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

3 - however, if you get the navigation window

    iPPSsave.PNG

that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.

This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..

With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:

    PSE9fileprefs.PNG

I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:

    PSE9genprefs.PNG

    Screenshots are from PSE 10

Note 1:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

Note 2:  editing a RAW file with either PSE or PS creates a new file which must be saved outside of iPhoto, i.e. the Desktop, and imported as a new photo into the iPhoto Library.

Thank you for the tip to set that up, I didn't know about that before.

do you know anything about why an ipod photo cache wouldn't appear when I sync my ipod?
