Q: External drive doesn't work

I have a new Toshiba external 1TB drive, 2.5 USB 3.0 connector.  It works fine with my iMac but the Macbook Air will not connect to it.  kernel.log:

That doesn't solve the issue. I have two Toshiba USB3 drives. One works perfectly on my Early 2011 MBP running Mavericks, the other one no way i can make it work. Works fine on my 2007 Mac Mini though.

I guess there is something fisshy about the Mac laptops...

Eventhough this threat started for MB Air, i will post what i found. I have a MB late 2008 withouth thunderbolt port. I bought the toshiba slim and had data transfer rate troubles. Never able to complete a Backup nor a even a simple and large  file drag and drop (as large as 10 GB) cause the low transfer rate put it an expectancy of 12-16 hours, which is ridicoulus. After reading a few of these post i found one helpful and very logic. The drive comes with a USB 3 ready cable (and we all assume it is backward compatible witn 2.0). Well, i found it is not. I took the suggestion of using a microUSB cable (i used the one that came with my Blackberry) and bum! it. I think the drill is the pinout of the conector is not really compatible or is crashing with some type of USB 2 port. Cant tell for sure but it has something to do with cycling the data or power, thus causing misfunctions.

Try and let everyone know what worked for you. Thanks

Two of my Toshiba USB3 external drives do not mount when plugged in directly to my MacBookPro "Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013" with OS X 10.9.2.  The DiskUtility will not see the drive(s) either.  Tested on my older Mac(s), iMac, Mac Pro, and Mac G5.  Both Toshiba USB3 drives work normally on those older Macs.

After reading this discussions, I connected the drives thru the Belkin Powered USB Hub.  I am able to use both USB3 drives as usual.

More info about the Belkin USB Hub I use:

    Cheers.

I haven't been able to get my 1TB Casio HDD to work with my iMac for 3 years. Finally after reading this and seeing the breakdown of the cable I switched and used a USB to the smaller USB (I think) on the left side of the portable HDD and it worked just fine. I always thought it was stupid Casio had this custom cable. I didn't realize it was 2 separate cables hooked into 1.

Worked for me, maybe itll work for someone else.

do you have any idea if this product will work? I have the late 2013 rMBP as well

I'm not much of a tech person and I'm not sure if this is essentially the same kind of product as the one you mentioned or not

Crazy! I have a Jawbone speaker and went to get that cord. I wouldn't have thought it would even fit into the drive. Guess I don't (or didn't) know what a micro USB cord was. Works now! Feel like Toshiba shouldn't put on the box this drive works with a MacBook.

As of April 2016 this solution worked for me as well. Old external drive wasn't recognized by newest MacBook when connected directly. When connected through an external usb hub built into my monitor, however, it mounted instantly.
