Then prep them in any 'paint' app, preinstalled Preview, or Keynote, or - my recommendation - Pixelmator.
With prepped stills and a simple dissolve, you can have a lot of fun with iMovie, this User Tipp shows:

Will this version enable me to have 2 video clips playing at the same time, i.e. a "layer" of one clip on top of another, and not picture in picture. The green screen feature requires a clip to be created against a green background, otherwise the layering is "washed out", when I just drag the event clip on top of the project clip? If not doable what version of imovie or required operating system is needed?
