Dec 20, 2014 1:53 PM in response to léonieby Old Toad,I haven't been paying enough attention to all of the topics and posts to tell if it's limited to a type of Mac or not. I have an iMac12,2.

Dec 25, 2014 8:13 PM in response to Caitlinemby Charmian Gaud,I have had the problem with both iPhone(new 6) and iPad Mini Retina V2 so it is definitely iOS8. It is compounded with Burst because a burst of 20 photos makes 40 imports with half having xx-2.jpg file names. If you have stored some camera shot photos on your device then you do get the opportunity to DO NOT IMPORT DUPLICATES by having an empty new camera import and clicking on one of the previously imported photos on the device on launching iPhoto.. Then you can say DO NOT IMPORT applies to all duplicates
... just tested.... YEH it does work - thanks Caitlinem for tracking that NO Duplicates import method

Dec 25, 2014 8:20 PM in response to Charmian Gaudby Charmian Gaud,I am using iOS8.1.2 so that kills the theory that it had improved with 8.1.2.. I also don't use PhotoStream which I doubt is involved in this problem as it is about importing into iPhoto. The stopping import of Duplicates - applies to all duplicates then checked is the way to go..
Some other solutions like setting up a new iPhoto Library and doing a safe boot are over the top and unnecessary... ANYONE having this issue should do an import and leave the photos on the device (preferably with just one or two photos); next uncouple the iDevice and couple it again before taking anymore photos with the camera. You then can choose to import one of the already imported photos. When importing that photo you will be asked if you want to import duplicates and you say NO and you check applies to all imports. After that the problem disappears. QED.

Dec 26, 2014 12:21 PM in response to pontixby Ade2,I have the same problem, what's the easiest way of removing the duplicates once they're in iPhoto?
-
Dec 26, 2014 1:24 PM in response to Ade2by Old Toad,These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
- iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
- Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported the library.
- PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
- DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
- DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
- PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) - this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison. It found all duplicates
- Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates: PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto. None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates. IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

Dec 26, 2014 2:55 PM in response to Old Toadby Ade2,Thanks, I hadn't synced for a while so only had this problem with my Last Import, my solution to remove the duplicates was to select all photos in Last Import, assign a keyword to all of them, create a smart album selecting for that keyword and where filename contains '_2', then delete everything from the smart album.
The original problem seems to be resolved (for me) by switching off 'Keep Normal Photo' in iPhone settings

Dec 28, 2014 12:57 AM in response to pontixby Fireplace_bhm,Ive been having the same issues with Aperture & iPhone 6 plus. I have the option to keep normal photos off and Aperture option to not import duplicates on but none of it seems to help.
Had started a thread in an Aperture forum but glad to finally find others having the same issue.

Jan 18, 2015 10:34 PM in response to pontixby glenn00000,I've ben having the exact problem.... so frustrating.
I've tried updating EVERYTHING...
Checked... Double Checked... and Further Triple Checked that all settings are to avoid any type of duplicating...
The only thing that has worked is....
I plus iPhone into my MacBook Pro and let iTunes finish it's backup... then disconnect iPhone and "restart' my laptop and restart my iPhone... reconnect and this time it loads just the single copies I want.
Yes it works but I WANT an Apple fix... as this is a waste of my time and a pain is the...............

It looks like the Apple developers were investigating this bug. See this post:
Re: Aperture Imports Duplicates and Triplicates of Photos from my iPhone 6 Plus
Send feedback to Apple using the feedback form: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
This way the developers will have more data to work with.

Jan 20, 2015 3:43 PM in response to pontixby mdccalvo,SOLUTION FOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have iPhone 5 running iOS 8.1.2 and I have Yosemite 10.10.1. To fix the duplicate photo issue in iPhoto 9.6, simply go to settings in iphone------- go to photo & camera ------ go down and turn OFF the "keep normal photo" tab. Solved the issue for me. Good luck to all.

Jan 20, 2015 5:19 PM in response to mdccalvoby glenn00000,Unfortunately Mdccalvo... that's NOT the duplicates we're all referring too.... thats just the setting to keep the original and the HDR version of a photo... the issue in iPhoto duplication would still make duplicates.... for example if I had a pic and same one as the HDR version pic, then I would end up with 4 pics (and sometimes 6 pics) on my computer.

Jan 23, 2015 10:34 AM in response to pontixby The Laughing Imp,I can report having this problem, too. My solution is below:
It's not related to HD pics. iPhoto sees two of every photo. If I import, the duplicates have sequential numbers appended to their filename, but they display as the same name in iPhoto before importing. There are no duplicates on my iPad. This is a process that only happens during the import process. iPhoto sees two copies of each photo for some reason and creates the duplicate as far as I can tell. It's very frustrating and time consuming. My suspicion was iCloud dupes weren't being filtered out. Lots of glitches with iCloud when Apple released Yosemite.
I didn't appreciate some of the snarky, patronizing responses the original poster received earlier in this thread. No wonder they haven't come back even though the tide is in their favor now that others have come forward. Let's be civil, people. If you don't have this problem, it doesn't mean that the people with the problem are stupider than you. It just means you don't have the problem. Be helpful, or don't speak up.
I recently cleaned out my iPad of pics and deleted all the dupes, but as you can see, it's starting again. Fortunately for me, my iPhone DOES NOT have this problem. That's what I use to take most of my pics. However, others in this thread have not been so lucky. I'm running 10.10.1 on my Mac, iPhoto 9.6, and OS 8.1.2 on both iPhone & iPad.
I looked over the suggestions in this other topic (Re: Aperture Imports Duplicates and Triplicates of Photos from my iPhone 6 Plus) and they didn't help. iCloud Photo Library (Beta) was not on. Keep Normal Photo wasn't an issue since I tend to dislike Apple's HDR and don't use it. What did work for me was turning off My Photo Stream. I've done some tests and so far this cleared out the glitch, even when turning it back on. I hope this solution helps others until Apple releases a fix. If I notice the problem returning, at least I have a way to clear it up. Please let me know if this worked for you. Good luck!

Jan 25, 2015 7:01 AM in response to pontixby hmizia,I think I found a solution, and it resides in iPhoto, not the phone.
- Open iPhoto
- Go to Preferences
- Click on Advanced
- Deselect "Copy items to the iPhoto Library" under Importing
I took a test photo after deselecting this box, and no duplicate! Hopefully this works for others, too.

That is a risky fix. You are aware, that iPhoto will no longer import photos to the iPhoto Library, but leave them in their original location? That opens a can of worms. It will be impossible to move the library with the photos to a new drive, and you may accidentally delete the originals, since they are in a folder outside the iPhoto library. iPhoto has no support to manage this type of library. I strongly recommend not to disable the option.
