Q: microsoft office crashes when trying to print

Hi, upgraded my Mac from Maverick to Yosemite and now my Excel, Word, Powerpoint randomly crash when i try to print (doesnt matter if i try to print to an actual printer or make it into a pdf.). At the beginning I noticed that especially it happened when i want to print just 1 page out of a longer Word document OR i am changing from letter to ledger size in Excel but now there is no rhyme or reason.

I did the Office updates, re-started obviously but as i am not very good at this software troubleshooting then i am at loss...

Hopefully someone can help!

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Welcome to the Apple Forum, Jansa T!

Does the problem only occur with the Microsoft apps?

Two things to consider trying are:

    (a) Launch Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder). In the left pane, click once on the name of your hard disk and on the right pane, click on the First Aid tab. Below the blank window, click the button "Repair Disk Permissions" and let it run. After completion, you might click the button "Verify Disk" just to be sure everything is OK on your hard disk. Now, try printing from an MS Office app.

    (b) It might be a font conflict. Consider reviewing Kurt Lang's Font Management in OS X article, particularly sections 1 through 3.

    Hi John,

I am not that good at this 'stuff' - do you mean the latest diagnostics report or the crashreporter one?

Hi Jansa, the crash reporter log would be better, please.

Office not working correctly after an OS update is quite common. The simplest and most reliable fix is to uninstall Office and then re-install it. Here is a link to Microsofts directions for removing Office correctly.

That is not the right one. Please look in Console and make sure that the logs are shown on the left (Hide/Show Log List in the toolbar). You should find a Word crash log in "System Diagnostic Reports" that corresponds to your print attempt.

...i can print from word and excel most of the time now, the powerpoint still just crashes...

    Great. Things are looking up...

    ...the powerpoint still just crashes...

The latest update is version 14.4.7. Is that the version that you have for all the MS Office apps?

It might still be a font problem. Do you use a third party font manager app? If not, then you have Apple's Font Book application that you can use to validate fonts, find and resolve duplicate apps.  Also, you might consider resetting the Font Book database as Kurt Lang wrote in his article linked above, section 6 "Using Font Book" and section 17 "How to handle font caches."

That's helpful, but not quite. Something with your Sharp printer is causing the crash, probably one of the plugins. There should be a crash log in Console that provides a more thorough trace of what's crashing. The easiest thing to do is reproduce the crash and then match the time the crash log in Console.

As John Blanchard1 wrote, "Something with your Sharp printer is causing the crash..." Your original post stated that you upgraded to Yosemite and updated Office but have you updated to a Yosemite compatible printer driver for your Sharp printer? If not, see the Sharp web site to download and install. Reboot the computer afterwards.

FYI: user yesiam666 reported a similar problem in October. Since then, Sharp has released updated printer drivers.
