This can be done depending on how you want to do this. If you are wanting to have an entire Apple ID for purchases, iCloud contacts and calendar syncing then yes creating an Apple ID and replacing your content will be the way to do this but you can set up Family Sharing to get all the previous purchases from your other Apple ID over. If it is just for contact, calendars and other iCloud data, then you can create that and just be signed into iCloud but still keep your current Apple ID signed in for the iTunes and App Store.
