Q: Visual voicemail over WiFi

Hello,

I have an iPhone 5 and stay up to date with the iOS updates. I hear this issue from other iPhone users as well, including iPhone 6. I keep my cellular data off and only turn it on if necessary to reduce cost. I primarily use Wi-Fi connection. Because cellular data is off I don’t realize that I have voicemail. I had an important voicemail from a week ago that I finally discovered when I turned on cellular data service. This was an important message and I didn’t even get a notice showing I had a new message.

Why can’t voice messages be received over WiFi, I mean it is a data connection regardless if it is cellular or WiFi data? Even if I at least received a notice showing I have a new message and it didn’t download over WiFi, I would be ok with that. It’s just frustrating that a notice of any kind wasn’t received.

I have searched many forums where people are asking this same thing. The answer that is always given is that cellular data needs to be on. In a way, this sort of makes using WiFi pointless. Apple, I love your products, but can you please fix this on your iOS, to allow for visual voicemail over WiFi, at least the notification?

I was having a similar problem with my voicemail. Try removing you SIM card, then reset your phone, power off your phone, then put your SIM card back in. I tried this and my visual voicemail works like a charm, with or without WiFi.

I'd guess it's wrapped up with how the voice network worked in the past.

You could create a Google voice account.  You can transfer your existing number to google or get a new number from google.  Google will email you a transcribed message of the voice message and let you listen to the recording on the web.

Thanks for the suggestion. i tried it, but that didn't correct the issue. When I have cellular data off and go to my voicemail, at the top of the mailbox there is a message that says something about unable to download visual voicemail due to cellular data being turned off, press here to call into your voicemail to check for messages. I don't know why this can't work over WiFi. Thanks again for the suggestion.
