Jan 1, 2015 8:04 AM in response to keongtayby Bob Timmons,The first requirement would be that an Ethernet cable connection must be established and maintained at all times between a LAN <--> port on the Asus router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
Are you able to do this?
If yes, what operating system are you using on your Mac....or will you use an iPhone or iPad to configure the AirPort Extreme?

Jan 1, 2015 11:59 PM in response to Bob Timmonsby keongtay,Hi Bob, unfortunately the distance between Asus router and Airport Extreme is too far apart to have an ethernet cable connecting them, which is why i am looking for a wireless solution. They are in separate rooms, and my house does not have the built-in ethernet infrastructure (e.g. inside wall sockets) to connect them.
Is wireless solution still possible without using ethernet cables to connect them?

Jan 2, 2015 4:52 AM in response to keongtayby LaPastenague,You cannot extend wireless in Apple routers except to or from other apple routers.
If you cannot run wires check using EOP (ethernet over power) adapters. They are not perfect but can help with devices on the same circuit.
Otherwise buy a standard wireless repeater.. not apple.

If you decide to try a pair of EOP adapters, it is always a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy. Some adapters seem to work OK in some homes, but not in others, so you may need to try a few brands to find one that will work for you.

Jan 4, 2015 6:03 AM in response to keongtayby keongtay,Bob and LaPastenague, thanks very much for the info. Looks like Apple routers really is proprietary (****!) - doesn't work well with other routers. I presently own Airport Extreme (router), and Airport Express (range extender). I wanted to use Asus router because it has added functions like static routes, etc, which unfortunately Apple router does not have at all.
I came across this article in the discussion forum is talking about how to use Non-Apple router and use Airport extreme or express as range extenders.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2271
Just wonder, will it work as wireless solution to my issue?
Bob, sorry i miss answering your other question. I am using windows laptop, not mac.

Just to add you generally cannot do static routes in a wireless extender.. it is not functioning as a router.. and so the route table is not working..
To route you need to setup the Asus as your main router and then plug in one Apple router as WAP and you can then extend your other apple routers.
By using the asus you will then have control over the routing as well as still using the apple to wireless extend.
If you need further help with this just ask.
I use an Asus router (or have done so.. not all the time) so due to my poor ISP, I use bridged adsl modem--Router running PPPoE client---Apple router in Static IP mode---Wireless Extend to other Apple routers.
It works quite well and I can block google public DNS servers. So I can watch netflix don't you know.

Jan 8, 2015 10:16 PM in response to LaPastenagueby keongtay,LaPastenague,
Thanks for the info. That's exactly what I want.
I spent quite a fortune on apple airport extreme and airport express so i am not prepared to ditch airport extreme for Asus router. I want to continue to use airport extreme if possible.
Do you have the step-by-step guide to install Asus router together with airport extreme? the airport express can remain where it is to extend my wireless network while Asus router and airport extreme sit side by side in the living room.
Thanks ahead for your help.

Jan 9, 2015 3:06 AM in response to keongtayby LaPastenague,I am not sure what broadband setup you have but as long as the Asus is working as router that is fine.
You can block the dns via the standard setup in the Asus.
http://help.unotelly.com/support/solutions/articles/165803-setup-static-routes-o n-asus-routers
You can use instructions from any of the DNS service providers.
The Apple router will then work better in static IP mode. I put the instructions in this post.. with lots of screenshots.. doing this allows you to then separate the network into those devices that use the DNS service and those that do not.. but all are still connected to the one network.
airport time capsule keeps disconnecting
And the Express can just extend wireless from the airport.
Hope that all makes sense.

Feb 1, 2015 1:17 AM in response to LaPastenagueby keongtay,Thank you LaPastenague and Bob for your advice.
I am able to set up Asus as router connected via LAN to Airport Extreme (in bridge mode) and with Airport Express acting as wifi extender taking signal from Airport Extreme. Able to get static route set up in Asus router too. Thus accessing Netflix is no problem now.
All works well!
Thanks again!

Jul 8, 2016 12:33 AM in response to LaPastenagueby Enoviles,OK this is exactly what I am trying to do.
I have just picked up an Asus 5300 and have an Apple
Airport Extreme Fifth gen. The Airport has treated me
well and I always got as good of wireless performance
from it in Speedtest as I did wired. I just picked up the Asus
because I got a ring doorbell and it seems to need the
wirless sitting right on top of it to work well. Unfortunately
that means the airport was not where the rest of the
devices needed it for a strong signal.
What is my best option? Two seperate wireless networks?
Run a cable from the Asus to the lan port? Wan port? on the airport and
use it to extend? As it isn't seeing the Asus wireless.
Also another odd issue is my old fifth gen airport connected to a very old Snapgear
SG570 router had 10 milliseconds better ping on Speedtest on all the severs
I have tested compared to just the Asus 5300. While the Snapgear was an impressive
piece of gear back in the day surely there is something going on?
