Q: Find tracks script

Hello I have an issue with not correctly linked tracks in I tunes, after editing names - such like "06 Lila Wolken" into "Lila Wolken".

I tried to help me with script "find tracks" of user , but I have had not success up to now.

It is not that complicated what I say to you now. Just to ensure that this is understood.

After I captured out, that almost no tracks could be found, because I edited the name of my library, I could fix

that by get Itunes to learn the correct path to the library I edited. So it applied it for all missing sound files, which were not edited before.

But I learned quickly, it might be to complicated for system and program to find those files, which name where edited before.

That is why I renamed my library to the name it had before. Now it is like it was before - the tracks

can be played, when they have not been edited. -

I dont wanna fix every music file in itunes with a exclanmation mark, because there are hundreds of.

Have you a guess why itnues does not ask, after I fix a file, to find other missing files in the same folder?

Because Itunes does this before, when I changed the library name and every tracks was a missing file.

-

Next to the script issue, I have read the explanation about it, see here : Any software that can rebuild iTunes songs lost to Unknown Artist/ Unknown Album

I am not the first and I will be not the last one who has a appliance question.

I tryied out tune tastic, once, but there is just a beta out, to fix this issue i am writing about.

Maybe you can help, if the script of turingtest2 did work for you.

The script always says,  that the files are not found.

Example:  Expected path "C:\Users\Lennart\Music\Wyclef Jean\Ecleftic\06 911"

But the song "Wyclef Jean & Mary J. Blige- 911" has the following path : C:\Users\Lennart\Music\MP3 Player\Wyclef Jean & Mary J. Blige- 911

In the end of this post I need to say - I found out for every missing sound file there is already a correct link in tunes media. So I have a lot duplicated tracks

one entry is working - the other is not....Thanks for reading - I will find out a solution for myself - I suppose I can.

    Hi,

Do I understand that the only change you made was to remove the leading track numbers from songs, otherwise leaving them in the same files and folders they were in before? If so can you reverse the change that you made with the same software that you used to make it.

The expected path given by the script is <Media Folder>\Music\<AlbumArtist>\<Album>\## <Name>.<Ext> (where <AlbumArtist> will be <Artist> if album artist is blank, or Unknown Artist if artist is also blank) which is where iTunes would put the file if it were in charge of moving it. However iTunes will know internally where the file was the last time it had access to it, but unfortunately my script cannot read that path. If you can move things back where they were it will fix the broken link. If you can move things to where iTunes would expect them to be, e.g. with MediaMonkey's FilenameFromTag feature, then iTunes should be able to repair them by itself, or if you can add extra rules to FindTracks to predict where your tracks are based on the properties then it should be able to do the job.

What are the exact properties of the track and how do they map out to the path? Is a flat folder structure? From what you shown it would appear that you've changed the layout from

    <Media Folder>\<Artist>- ## <Name>.<Ext to

    <Media Folder>\<Artist>- <Name>.<Ext

essentially deleting two digits and a space.

If that is correct I can suggest a tweak to my script to make it search for tracks with that form of file path.

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here at the link you've posted: Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break the other.

Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.

Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.

(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)

The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

    Hello!

    To you -

"Do I understand that the only change you made was to remove the leading track numbers from songs, otherwise leaving them in the same files and folders they were in before? If so can you reverse the change that you made with the same software that you used to make it."

"From what you shown it would appear that you've changed the layout from

    <Media Folder>\<Artist>- ## <Name>.<Ext to

    <Media Folder>\<Artist>- <Name>.<Ext

essentially deleting two digits and a space."

Including in the hundrets of the music files I changed manuelly, with no Software - which was a good time killer, when I was bored -

files had different numbers/digits at the front of the name. - All the way, from 01 to 99 for example.

I used the instruction from the link, we both posted. Yes - it was easier to select the tracks, that had a missing path - because those have had a duplicate which work. I am done, now , and whenever I get new music files, I will directly change the names, if they have a not very orderly name.

I would accept your friendly offer to tweak your script, to use - but I worked myself through in organization.

But in future I would like to use it if necessary - I could support some other acquiantance people outside internet and maybe some unknown inside of the internet to use this in connection with itunes. Lets start this, if you are willing - get some more knowledge about this organisation-script around.
