Q: key not valid for use in specified state

On the latest update for iTunes for Windows the updated couldn't complete and said to download the full version. When I ran the iTunes64Setup I got the following message " key not valid for use in specified state". I then uninstalled iTunes, rebooted, ran the iTunes64Setup and still got the message " key not valid for use in specified state". I'm now without iTunes. I did a Google and searched this community and couldn't find anything on this. Can someone guide me to a solution?

Thanks,

Mike

I encountered same problem.  I have Sony VIAO Windows 7.  Microsoft pushed security update KB2918614 and update is blocking software installation.  I first encountered when installing new HP printer setup software.  I had to delete update and software installed fine. I thought I was done till I went to update iTunes 11.4 and got same error message, i.e. "key not authorized in specified state".   Even though I deleted security update microsoft reinstalled it with subsequent updates. Once I deleted it again iTunes updated fine.  This MS security update is causing problems for multiple software installs like HP printers, Apple ITunes, Tom Tom, etc.   U can find discussions on I-Net where I found fix.

U Need to go to Start-------Control Panel--------Uninstall Programs-------Security Updates on left------find and uninstall KB2918614.   Then reboot and try to install iTunes update.

Hope it works for u too.

I am having the same issue.  Key not valid for use in specified state.  Uninstalled all components and etc for Itunes.  Restarted, redownloaded straight from Apple.  RSA folder was not where someone stated it was, but found it and moved it.  NOTHING is working!! Will not download.  Four hours of my life wasted.   NEVER had trouble until going to this 12.0 update.  Running Vista svc2  32bit.  Please help.

Have you checked for and removed Windows update (KB2918614) if present?

Have you tried my suggestions in my first post to this thread key not valid for use in specified state?

If so which, if any, components will install? What error messages do you get this time?

Hi, so Windows update (KB2918614) does not exist in past year of my update history.  Which makes me wonder, why not, but anyway....went back through this chat thing and I think I have done all of it.  I unistalled all the stupid programs that go with iTunes.  I did miss the MobileMe.  My computer would not let me unitstall so I had to down load the fixit app.  Got that accomplished, Ran some viral ware, CCcleaned, shutdown restarted, downloaded itunes AGAIN from Apple.  SAME STUPID Key not valid!!!  Frustrated and now eight hours of my life wasted.  And what components? I downloaded the itunes setup and clicked it. It gives me the key not valid for use in specified state.

The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if one component won't install normally. It might at least narrow down which component isn't installing right now, but unless we know which (registry?) key it is complaining about it may still not install. See this post for a method to generate log files during the install of the problem component: Re: AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi  for windows 8.1

If you follow the advice it will become clear which components I mean. For iTunes to work you also need to install Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update (not stricktly required), Bonjour, as well as iTunes itself.

As I understand it this is a Windows issue rather than iTunes specific. Something has broken the Windows Installer Service. Rolling back that update usually fixes it! perhaps the Vista equivalent had a different KB reference.

Try http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/tweaking_com_repair_msi_(windows_install er).html - you can either copy the commands one at a time and perform them in a command window or download their tool.

Ok....so I finally gave up and called Apple  (Super super helpful!  Craig was great!) one thing I have not done, that was mentioned in earlier posts......, create a new user.  That worked.  downloaded just fine.  now set up on my current user.  I definitely have something wrong on my user though, java would not install either.  All points back to that windows update that I do not have.  All else fails, new user !  Thanks TT2 for all your help!

How did you create a new user? That's the last thing I need to try because I've tried everything else suggested in this post.
