Q: What's the point of "do not disturb"

Can't you just put your phone on silent if all it does is silence your calls/notifications? It doesn't prevent the notifications from showing up on your screen anyway so what difference is there between do not disturb and just silencing your ringer?

Do Not Disturb is more nuanced than just turning your ringer to silence. You can set it up on an automatic schedule, you can allow certain callers to get through, you can allow a repeat call within a specific timeframe to come through:

I like Do not disturb because you can set it and forget it. I have it set to "only while iPad is locked" and leave do not disturb on all the time. When I sleep so does my iPad.
