Q: Problems with native OS X apps after Yosemite upgrade

Hi there..

2 days after I upgraded to Yosemite from OS X 10.6.8, native applications like Mail, Map, Contacts etc are not opening. Safari is starting properly, but I can't make a search with Bing, or I can't write a new address to go; I can only go to the Favourites with Safari.

I tried many ways by suggestions about these apps single by single, but I couldn't find any similar situation in internet, which all these apps are gone (except the Calendar).

Where should I look to solve this problem? Any suggestions?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

    Hi,

    Open the Font Book App.

Check the System Fonts all Validate (File Menu)

Helevtica Neue is important in Yosemite where as earlier OSes used Helvetica to display the Window titles and other text needed.

Messages needs AppleGothic (all one word and well down the list in Font Book).

    Thank you..

But like many of them, I couldn't open the Font Book as well. All I can see is that AppleGothic.ttf is visible in system's library..

    hi,

Can you open Applications/Utilities and Start the Disk Utility app

If you can chose the First AID tab and use Repair Permissions.

If you cannot restart the computer holding down the CMD+ALT+P+R keys until you have heard three Start up Bongs then let the start up continue.

If that does not work Start up in Safe Mode

Both these last two access and clear caches and other temporary items that other maintenance cannot reach.

If that does not work then Restart holding down CMD +R

At the screen that suggests reinstalling go to the Menu Bar at Utilities and Start Disk Utility from there and do First Aid > Repair Permission again.

Thanks again.. I did that 2 times (without using Safe Mode) but nothing changed..

But as an another probability, I remembered that I used CleanMyMac before this mess.

I deleted lots of caches, logs, universal binaries, system junk and especially all the language files when I used the cleaner. Now English is not in 'Languages to Keep' list of CleanMyMac and I couldn't be sure if English has an immunity as the main language or my setup has changed with the download of Yosemite.

    Hi,

Clean My Mac is not a good app.

    Delete it.

Then Reinstall the OS using CMD + R at the Computer Start up.

    Hi,

It was not good news I am afraid.

Clean My Mac and Mackeeper both have bad reputations.

Even if you have a Time Machine Backup returning to an earlier  across the whole Drive is not as easy as it sounds.

A Reinstall will not touch your Mac User account (Unless you Erase first) it just installs the OS again over what you have.

You're saying that reinstalling yosemite is secure without any need of backing up, right? I was planning how and where I can back up my older applications and files before reinstalling but it isn't really necessary?

Actually I'm not able to make a recovery as well. If I make partitioning on my external drive, I'll lose everything, I have to erase it first. And besides, I can't use the Time Machine as well; it gives only the Airport Time Capsule as an option.

    Hi,

I was expecting your to have a recent Backup already made.

Generally speaking  the CMD+ R and choosing to reinstall from the Servers does not cause an issue.  The Backup is for "just in Case".

You should also be able to reinstall from the Backup (Time Machine) if you would rather. Hopefully you know the dates to avoid that involve using the clean up app.

ON the Drive if you do Partition you do lose everything that is on the Drive and you would need a Time Machine back up to put it back.

Does you Time Capsule include it's own drive for Time Machine Backups ?

Have you been making or allowing the system to make Backups ?

It gives only the option of a time capsule can be used via internet. So it looks that I have to do it without any backup; I'm stucked..

I thank you for your help..

    Hi,

I must admit to not having a Time Capsule and I use and External Firewire drive as my Backup/Time Machine drive.

The Time Capsule would be connected by Ethernet and therefore be on the "Net" for your home.  I am not sure how this appears in the CMD+ R options.
