    Hi Prousa . . . this is the 5th posting.  Are you resubmitting the posting or is Apple Support screwed up today?  BTW, AOL Tech Support, including chat and phone, is only available to "Eligible Members," i.e. those that pay for the service.  Since I was one of the very first subscribers to free AOL Mail - waaaaaay back in the 80's, I guess I no longer matter.

    Just checked again . . . I can't even get an AOL tech person unless I upgrade to a paid account.  I've been wanting to leave AOL for years due to their poor service and poor mail program but I can't . . . after nearly 30 years, I have too many web accounts linked to my aol address.  One Level 10 community support responder told me he tried to leave AOL and maintained it along with his new email provider . . . after 3 years, he was still getting important mail on his AOL account.  So I'm stuck with AOL but would love to upgrade to Yosemite . . . I get prompted almost daily to do so.  Many apps are now tune to the new OSX.  OK, enough already!

    Same problem here. I got a 30 day free tech support today. this is what they said to me-I just confirmed with AOL tech support today, 1/6/2015. AOL is still committed to remedy this problem soon. No forecast available as of to-date, but it will be fixed as promised. Meantime, I use AOL email via Apple Mail and wait until AOL fix this problem. I was a member since 1989 with AOL.. Stephen

    AOL admitted it is on AOL side...I use Apple mail as well.

    Thanks . . . if you can talk to AOL tech again, ask them specifically if the conflict is between the application AOL Desktop and Yosemite, or is it a conflict between AOL Mail and Yosemite Apple Mail.  Now, I use Apple Mail linked to AOL Mail . . . it goes to AOL and retrieves my mail, sends my mail, etc.  I can do all this through the AOL website, but it's a pain and multiple steps.  I do NOT use AOL Desktop app.  See if you can get this answered.  I can't.  Thanks.

    Yes contacted AOL recently and they said they will be trying to releasing an update the next week or so.

    Thanks Faith . . . if any reader has AOL Support (paid account), could you please ask them the question I can't seem to get answered.  Perhaps I haven't made myself clear.  Is the conflict between AOL and Yosemite between AOL Desktop (the application) and Yosemite?  or between AOL Mail and Yosemite Apple Mail in general?  I do not use AOL Desktop for email.  I use the Apple Mail app which links to my AOL account, retrieves, sends, archives, trashes, etc., my AOL Mail.  If someone could get an answer to this, my problem might be solved.

    1/10/2015 Chat w/ AOL tech support.. I asked your specific question is it application or mail related problem, below are his ( AOL/JOEL) answers:

    A) only the AOL Desktop software is not yet fully compatible with Apple OSX Yosemite.

    B)  I think it's the AOL Desktop software itself, you can view your emails using a Safari browser for the meantime by going to mail.aol.com

    C) Don't worry Stephen, this has already been escalated to our fix team.

    D) The AOL Desktop software is not yet compatible with the new operating system on Mac.

    E) You AOL emails is still functional by using the web mail version using a browser like Safari or Firefox.


    I hope this provides a temporary answer to what is to come.. Hopefully, a fix to accommodate Yosemite OS X 10.10

    Thanks Stephen . . . I may just wait it out to be sure.  I hear once you've installed Yosemite, it's impossible to uninstall and go back.  I have a complete bootable backup of my iMac so I could give it a try and if it doesn't work, I can move the backup to the hard drive to get rid of Yosemite.  AOL told us we would access all our mail through the web, but I have many smart mailboxes set up with Apple Mail that wouldn't work.  Plus, the format is completely different and I'm not certain if my established mailboxes will continue to function.  I don't want to risk loosing several years of research e-mails and downloads (genealogy).  As you know, restoring e-mail is not always simple and I have almost 2,000 e-mails in my research so . . . where would I begin?  OK, I know, too much information but I thought I'd post them for other readers as well.  Thanks for taking the time to check this out.

    Dear Rod:

    I have a similar situation as yours. I ran an export business for 15 years using AOL..imaging the invoices , customer correspondences and many product images.. One question if I may ask.. How do you make your back-up "bootable" I have WD My Cloud 2TB... I am just not intelligent enough to figure it out. Can you help???

    Hi Steven . . . there are a couple of ways to do this, including using Apple's Disk Utility, using Terminal (I'm not comfortable doing this - you can screw things up very quickly) or using a third party application to make what's called a "clone" of your hardrive that is bootable.  Of course, you'll need a large enough external hardrive that been formated for the Mac.  I downloaded a free application called SuperDuper but I often see reference to another popular app, Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC).  There are others.  This can be a little tricky so you might check out a few discussions, such as Make a bootable clone of your boot drive or Apple's knowledge base Apple - Support - Search  Good luck!  Rod

    had same problem, tried aol for iPad that I had been using on my iPad. It seems to work fine on macbook air using os x yosemite. Download aol for iPad app and should be OK

    I feel bad that no one has answered this very simple question for you. Apple's Mail app and AOL Desktop for Mac are two different software applications. If you do not use AOL Desktop for Mac, then nothing in this thread is pertinent to your situation. There is no problem with AOL Mail through the Yosemite Mail app. Mail in Yosemite only uses your AOL login. The Mail app is a feature of Mac OS X and works perfectly fine in Yosemite. I have an AOL mail account and there is no issue checking it through Mail in Yosemite. Smart Mailboxes are a feature of Mac OS X and have nothing to do with AOL. The AOL Desktop for Mac software does not work because it is coded in a way that is not compatible with Yosemite. That's why it crashes on launch. If you do not use the AOL Desktop for Mac software, then you will not have any compatibility issues.
