Aug 14, 2014 7:56 PM in response to Znonby MadMacs0,I think we have a good handle on this one now.
If you have more than one browser, be sure to check those as well, since it's been found in Safari, Firefox and Google Chrome.
TheSafeMac's Adware Removal Tool has been updated to include removal of all three.

Sep 4, 2014 5:03 AM in response to MadMacs0by Roger Dawson,I found a copy of the Macvx.dmg file in my downloads folder. Must have been downloaded with something else, but I don't know what. If you want a copy I can send it to you.

Sep 8, 2014 9:11 AM in response to angela2453by Sasay,Thomas Reed's site Safe Mac and Thomas himself have been a huge help to me with this kind of problem. I just came to the forums to figure out what this exact ad- or mal- ware was, downloaded the new AdMedic app from TR's site, and it found it and got rid of it right away. Just deleting it from the extensions in Chrome didn't work (which is something TR has told me to watch out for with past problems).
I really appreciate that we have someone out there who is working on these issues for us!!

Sep 12, 2014 6:44 AM in response to BGJby diebler,This just happened to me. I was able to get rid of the issue by looking in my web browsers' (Safari and Firefox) plug-ins/extensions directory and removing the culprit. My browser seems to be working fine now.
It was installed in:
Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Firefox > Tools > Add-ons Manager > Extensions
Just "remove".

There's probably more to be removed. Might be an app in /Applications/ which will re-inatall the extensions if you run it. Also could be a macvx.dmg in you download folder. For safest, easiest removal of most all currently known adware, use AdMedic and to understand how it came to be installed and avoiding it in the future, read John Galt's How to install adware.

Oct 18, 2014 9:21 AM in response to angela2453by Teesyg,Macvx is in your browser settings, under extensions.
On Chrome, choose History / Show Full History / Extensions /
from there you will see a list of your extensions, Macvx will be one of them. Remove it.

Oct 18, 2014 9:54 AM in response to Teesygby MadMacs0,At the time of this report, the MacVX variant of VidX adware was not known, so the instructions could be a bit off.
There is now an AdwareMedic tool by the author of the Adware Removal Guide which will safely and efficiently locate all currently known adware and will optionally delete it for you.

I had the same trouble in my Safari Browser, so, I checked on preferences and in the "Extensions" I saw an extension called "MacVx" and I selected it and clicked "uninstall" and i got it fixed and no more ads.
I hope it helps.

Dec 6, 2014 8:02 PM in response to scrowderby MadMacs0,There might be additional files associated with this. If you use Firefox or Chrome, they will almost certainly also have that extension. You might still have the installer used to add these. The fastest, most effective way to identify and optionally remove all currently known adware is by using AdwareMedic, developed by thomas_r. this Forum's malware guru, owner of TheSafeMac and a colleague of mine.
To understand why this happened and how to avoid such things in the future read John Galt's How to install adware.
