I've got a 64gig iPad 4 with retina display. Its just over a year old, and recently this weird typing stuff started. It doesn't jump pages, but it does add letters between words forcing me to go back and correct all typing. It seems to happen in mail, safari, here in the support forum. I'm using an Apple folding case since new, this unit is scratch-free and has never been dropped. All corners are protected and i'm a retired senior, this iPad sits on a desk when its not in my lap, this case has a cover too.
I'm convinced its not hardware, its software. My hardware hasn't changed in 14 months but theres been a few iOS updates. I notice the same thing happening on my iPhone 4. Had it for a couple years and its only gone screwy the past 4-6 months? Unless aliens are shooting rays at our houses LOL, i really have to say its a iOS glitch, maybe one that apple won't/can't fix.
Sorry to hear about this on such a spec'ed out item. I'm almost certain it's a hardware failure as others have said. I just went thru the same thing with my Mini- I bought it new Christmas 2012 and 10 months later, it had a faulty board that caused constant reboots- Apple replaced under warranty and 10 months later, it started into this possessed behavior. I took it back, hoping against hope that Apple would do the right thing and replace it. I know it's technically out of warranty but they admitted it was a hardware issue and that the unit was MINT condition, and they guaranteed me that they did NOT replace with refurbished equipment, so I really feel that they should give you another year warranty if they have to replace your unit in <1 year. It should reset out of their admission you got a bad unit. Because now, after 10 months, they wanted to replace it for $220 (plus tax). I declined.
I've had other phones and tablets from HTC and Samsung that lasted several years without any concerns. I feel like I'm handling my phone and ipad like fine crystal and they still die (had an iPhone 5 replaced under warranty due to faulty power button and 4 months later, the replacement got that HW issue that caused locking/resetting anytime an app accessed the camera).
So, anyone wanna buy a possessed iPad Mini cheap?

Sep 21, 2014 7:00 AM in response to gfunkusareliusby adam vaughn,Its all in the extension cord...both my wifes iphone 5s and Ipad mini were acting glitchy and possesed when trying to do simple gestures. Turns out it only acted like this when connected through extension cords with no gound plug (3rd prong). I find it weird that the power cables dont have a ground prong but dont act weird when connected to a power strip or straight to the wall....must be a ground issue.

Nov 10, 2014 6:54 PM in response to Ejack3by SER_M,Stop searching and read this: it happen the same to my Ipad mini and I became crazy searching the answer. Annoying and frustrating! I allways thought it was a hacker, but it wasn't. Somehow I realized that all the problem started when I put a screen protector anti scratches on it. Since I removed it, problem fixed!!! Incredible, isn't it?
No hardware problems, no Apple Stores visits: just remove the crap to protect it and it will work again.
You're wellcome.

Mar 9, 2015 3:09 AM in response to Ejack3by 6pls,my daughter (8 years old) has an ipad mini, last week it starts to choose randomly letters and apps. it is out of control now. I went to Southampton apple store to ask about it. they said me that it is more than 12 months old, therefore no guarantee, they did not solve the problem, they did not find out the issue, they just offer me to buy new one. apple makes a good looking device, and this is a common problem. there are so many ipads behaving like this. apple technicians do not know what to do other than give new one if it has guarantee or sell new one. this is crazy. I have iphone, ipad 2 and ipad mini, no longer apple for me.

Mar 15, 2015 12:19 AM in response to Ejack3by IvyVolturi297,I had my iPad screen cracked.. I got it fixed and it was normal for a bit then started to type by itself, open apps itself.. etc.
A year later, the touch screen had parts of it I couldn't tap and it was as annoying as ever. Funny how it happens after I got it fixed.. Have you ever had the screen cracked?

May 3, 2015 7:10 AM in response to 6plsby sailawaysoon,I have the same problem with my ipad air - just out of warranty. Looking back through all the posts, this problem has been around for 5 years - why is no-one at Apple addressing this issue?
-
May 28, 2015 3:30 AM in response to sailawaysoonby MEL86x,i agree 5 years this issue has been going on for an Apple have done nothing.I suppose though they know people will keep buying the iPads. Shocking as iPads are not cheap and this is obviously an ongoing issue. you would expect Apple to be doing something to resolve these issues.

Jun 17, 2015 7:09 PM in response to Ejack3by awilkins,Unbelievably, the "bending" the ipad backwards like trying to fold it in half worked. I have a replacement screen, so I assume that the screen is activating the touch response randomly and bending it somehow reset it. I don't know how long it will work but I'm just amazed that it did. I tried that simply because it was the easiest thing suggested, other than simply turning the ipad off and back on.

Aug 6, 2015 6:49 AM in response to MEL86xby upios6,my ipad mini after the latest ios update started to hang and very slow to respond then just the other day, i got scared that my screen went on zooming then unzooming again and again. and it is like keeps on opening a new tab that i am not typing on the address bar so new tabs keeps opening one by one without me typing them!! when you press the home button, it is opening my apps and sometimes making a new email.. good thing they were not being sent!!! when i am opening my ig, it keeps on liking the posts on its own!! its very weird and freaky!! updating ios sometimes is upsetting! it is just like updating your ios to destroy your unit!! grrrrr!!!

Aug 16, 2015 7:48 AM in response to upios6by Slipgate,My nephew's iPad mini had all these symptoms and it took me almost 2 hours of fiddling to fix it. I'd already tried tapping it, bending it. No joy. I ran a full reset and clear everything, however, it carried on the random typing even on the setup screens. It somehow managed to put in a passcode twice and 'ok' it so I didn't even know what the code was!
I hooked it up to a laptop and ran the reset and update to 8.4.1. Restarted and no problems whatsoever. I enabled the iCloud email then FaceTime. However, as soon as I enabled iMessage, the iPad went mental again! I was just about able to turn off iMessage and the problem completely went away.
So, try turning off iMessage. It's bizarre to think that caused it, and looks like someone's able to remote control it?!?! I can't believe that's what's actually happening, but it certainly got rid of the problem.
Anyway, give that a go and see if it makes a difference.

Sep 17, 2015 12:27 PM in response to Slipgateby Soninha Loves Ipad,I have a Mini Ipad and started to act by itself. I´ve noticed that two spots on the scren were being typed.
I called the Apple support in Brazil and though my warranty was gone, they recommended me to do the reset . I insisted that it seemd to be a hardware issue and they asked me to do the reset anyway and reinstall everything. I did that.
It worked fine .... but after a few months the issue was back.
I resetted it again but this time the issue is not gone. I read all this posts and I decided that I will try a second rese later...
But before, I removed the cover sheet and it didn´t work.
I stopped the imessage and it seems that it is more stable now.... not so alive by itself.
I am observing it before doing a second reset .....it seems that I will have to buy a new Ipad. Mine was bought one week after the sandy Hurricane in 2012...
Thanks for the support
