Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

When you say "working great", since you have single handedly managed to resolve all the issues, which Apple products are you to referring to and what wifi connection, router, settings, etc?

Or, are you just being sarcastic?

BTW, 8.1.1 isn't the latest version.

    Hi Bootsox,

In regards to your comments above to mmurray47, he is not being sarcastic, he is an Apple lover who thinks that the problems with Wi-Fi are the fault of the users, not iOS. He started posting on page 96 and you can read what he said then and my response to him. Also please read what London Lad said about the problems and posters like him. mmurray47 says that he "manages iOS devices on a corporate setting" but as you pointed out he apparently does not know that 8.1.1 is not the latest! Pity whatever "corporate" iOS he manages.

The router that I purchased on Amazon.com was, Netgear Nighthawk X4 (AC2350).  The old Router that I replaced was also Netgear, but old and at end of life.  With the old Router both my wife and I would drop WiFi about every 4 days or so.  My phone was a 5S and my wife's phone was a 5C.  It's been about 3 weeks now.  So far so good.  I hope it continues good.

    Hi elcpu,

Have you considered the possibility that the "corporate" Ios mmurray47 manages may be located in Cupertino ?

LOL, no I had not considered that!!! but if so they need to tell him that iOS 8.1.2 came out in early December... Actually I have been in communications with a very good AppleCare rep who has passed the issue up the chain but gee, maybe not up to "the manager"

I had an old Linksys WRT54G that worked with everything including the IPhone 5s and everything else I have that is Android.    I received an Air2 for Christmas and the thing wouldn't connect or it would for a few seconds at a time really slow and then drop out.  Since the router is ancient, I went to Wally World and bought an ASUS RT-AC68R and BOOM, it connected no problem and fast.  I'm definitely no techie so I left all the router settings to whatever the default was except for the SSID and password part.

One thing I have noticed...... My iPad connection can be working rather well. Try using it while my kid is on the laptop next to me my Wi-Fi connection drops.

It doesn't slow it drops. Seems like it's having a problem sharing the router. Walk away from the laptop and go downstairs..... Connection resumes.

I made the recommended changes to Miss Gem and will keep you guys posted - My Samsung Chrome kept working my my 2 ipads would not - The only way to regain the connection was to reboot the wireless router - We wil see if missgem nailed it.

    I'm using a D-Link DIR-655

Only temporary.  Does not fix for most users.

From my own experience and experience of my friends who also have iPhone 4s and iphone 5 all running ios 8.1.2 (except of one who did not update his iphone 5c, he still have ios 7) the problem is not in router neither in device hardware. It is in software. We all tried testing several routers, all new, bought in the beginning of the year 2014. The only iphone  that is working properly (I'm talking about wifi)  is the one running ios 7.1.2 . The rest of us got freezing phone from time to time when trying to launch wifi on main slider bar. Phone is unusable for about a minute or so. When it comes back to normal wifi is only loading/searching for wifi even though the device is few steps from router. If hard reset is made during freezing time after rebooting wifi icon is grey. Puf...gone.. it turns back on when battery is completely drained out or if you expose phone to extreme low temp. Than the wifi is working properly for about few days. I wanted to gather as many people as I can and are close to me and  that  have iphone running ios 8 to see if I am the only one having problems but this evidently showed that it is not hardware glitch as apple employee said to me in iStore.

I don't know why but the longest period of time that my wifi actually worked without a problem on ios  8 was when I was having installed iOS 8.1. It's not that it had no problems, but it never had this "greyed wifi" which is very frustrating.

If anyone here in group has iPhone 4s and have greyed out wifi problem please write your experience and what do you recommend. Because my phone bill is going to be sky high if I remain to use every download or app update through mobile data carrier.  Thanks.

That's an interesting thought! I have an iPad Air 32GB, with iOS 8.0.2 installed. Got it late December 2014. At home I have no connectivity issues at all!! Wi-Fi never drops. At work, my Wi-Fi connection drops within 30-60 seconds of connecting. My home router is a Netgear WNDR4500 (N900) with dual-band Wi-Fi. I have DIFFERENT SSID names for each band, just like the Linksys tech support told you to try. That's the way I originally set up my network 1-1/2 years ago. Again, I have no issues connecting my iPad at HOME.

HOWEVER, at work, we just had new Cisco wireless access points installed around the office. I have one about 10 feet from me. Solid signal, but iPad drops connection regularly. Here at WORK we use the same SSID name for both bands. I may see if our IT guy is willing to try changing the SSID names for each band and see if it helps.

I went into my Linksys router, renamed the 2.4 and 5 unique names and chose the 5 for my iPhone but did not fix the issue.  I have a new AC router on order and I will see if that works better with my iPhone 6.
