Q: Quicksilver 2002 won't shut down. . Need help.

I am using the 933MHz. version. Have 3 internal HD's, 2 external firewire HD's. I have two USB PCI cards installed. Memory is 1.5 GB. I had the exact same machine, which did this. I finally gave up and switched to my spare. Changed over the PCI cards, HD's and memory. Same issue... I've tried the usual ways to isolate the problem, but none seem to work. i.e. - Replaced battery, predded and held pram button, and started up using key combo to make it chime three or four times. Still no luck. I unplugged all USB and Firewire cables except keyboard, removed the USB cards one at a time, as to preserve keyboard use. - Nothing. I also repaired privileges. This just happened out of the blue. I hadn't added any Apps, cards, or anything else. I would be thankful for any suggestions. Tom

    BDAqua,

Restart hasn't been working either, only holding power button in for several seconds shuts it down. I tried your two suggestions with no luck. Didn't know I had to type in "reset-nvram", Etc., but figured it out. it started up after the last command. Thanks so much for your time!

    Hmmmm,

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last shutdown problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.

Click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v

A few dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.

I went back to where it said something about "hangup" or something, then copied down. There are still about five or six postings, and they all mentioned something about "Menustrip'. Heres what I got for you:

    OK, that's helpful!

    We have some problems...

Jan  7 17:03:14 Macintosh mDNSResponder: Couldn't read user-specified Computer Name; using default “Macintosh-0003936CBC34” instead

In System Preferences>Sharing, rename your Computer.

Jan  7 17:03:27 Macintosh /Library/StartupItems/ProTecVb/NalpeirondVb: NalpeirondVb: sysctlnametomib failed: No such file or directory

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)

On restart see if we still get that error.

Jan  7 17:03:42 Macintosh /Applications/MenuStrip.app/Contents/MacOS/MenuStrip: The function CGSReadObjectFromCString is obsolete.

If MenuStrip is in the Dock, make sure it's not set to Open at Login. If not...

Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it is listed, if so highlight it & click the tiny minus icon.

    Hi,

Tried all those things, but still no-go. U booted to my Utilities disk and ran Diskwarrior to no avail. Selected my main drive to boot to and it restarted fine. Gotta be something in the software of that one Drive. Here is the latest readout from Console. Thanks again for your help! (BTW), the computer had no name before.

Does it happen booting from that?

I once had the no shutdown problem, took a year or so to figure it out, a different App than yours, but see my post here from Thu Oct 31, 2013 9:15 pm...

I'm sure it's just a different app on yours causing the same thing.

The computer starts, restarts and shuts down from the Firewire Drive. I tried the energy saver trick. - No-go. This is getting a little complicated. Are you suggesting that I remove all items from the two startup items folders, and say maybe put them in folders on the desktop to save them? Then replace them a couple at a time to find the bad one? Will the machine run with nothing in those folders? I haven't backed up my machine for a while, but I compared the startup folders in my backup Drive and main Drives. In the System/Library/Startupitems they both had the same number of folders and they were named the same. In The Library/Startupitems folders, the backup Drive only had a folder named Protecvb. The main drive had this folder plus one named autorunkit. I don't know that any of this matters... Frustrating, isn't it? Thanks again!
