Q: IPad data overage 18Gbytes overnight

How is it that an iPad in sleep mode, can use >18 Gbytes of data in about a 3 hour timespan, 3:30am to 6:30 am CST? We have a wirelss network in the area, and it is the default setting.  We do not stream TV, movie or sound.
