Jan 3, 2015 6:44 AM in response to jameshotyby braden85,Hey jameshoty,
I see that you may be having an issue with some badges showing updates that turn out to not be available through the App Store on your iPad. I would like to suggest that you undertake a few basic troubleshooting steps, such as restarting your iPad and resetting it. These steps are found in the following article:
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

Jan 3, 2015 3:35 PM in response to braden85by jameshoty,Hi Braden
Thanks for taking the time to answer. This iPad that I am having problem with right now, is a brand new iPad. The update counter now shows 1. The previous 2 are gone and now showing 1 available update but again the button is OPEN instead of UPDATE.
Looks like a ******** response / update by the "App Store" app on the iPad. Not sure if I am speaking the right thing.

Jan 6, 2015 10:33 AM in response to jameshotyby braden85,Hey again jameshoty,
I have another suggestion for you. It may be helpful for you to perform the troubleshooting steps found in the following article to see if any of these affect your situation:
iOS: An app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201398
This step may be especially helpful for this issue:
Install another app from the App Store
If your installed app won't open, download and install a free app that isn't on your iOS device. This should reset your Apple ID authorization.
Remember to use the same Apple ID that you used to download the app that you're having issues with.
Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!
Cheers,
Braden

Jan 9, 2015 5:09 PM in response to Know My Nameby jameshoty,If I remove the app (via iTunes > Remove > Sync, the counter reset to 0. The next two days, the counter appear 5 for other apps. and I remove and uninstall the app, and reinstall, the counter reset to 0. but for one of them, which is a magazine. and I still trying to remove it.
The question now is if I am going to do that moving forward?

Jan 9, 2015 5:36 PM in response to jameshotyby frazzm737,Have you tried a reset as was suggested earlier in thread? If not, hold down both Home and Sleep/Wake buttons, ignore slider until you see Apple logo. The device will reset without losing any data. Certainly worth a try.

Jan 10, 2015 10:17 AM in response to jameshotyby medgirl,@jameshoty - I have the same problem. I have had it since updating an iPhone 5S to iOS 8 when it came out. It also affects an iPad Air 2, iPhone 6, and a couple of other iPads in our household. Some of those devices started having this problem under iOS7. I had this problem before upgrading to Yosemite.
There are other threads here about this problem but nothing seems to fix it. Rebooting, resetting, restoring from backup, setting up as a new device, etc. - nothing has fixed it for me. I submitted a bug report to Apple but never heard anything.
For others on this thread who may not understand exactly what we're talking about, this is what happens:
1. App updates are downloaded on iTunes on my Mac (running Yosemite).
2. Device syncs to iTunes and apps seem to be updated on the device.
3. The notification badge for the App Store on the device still shows that updates are needed. But, as you can see in jameshoty's screenshot above, the apps that should have been updated are listed under Available Updates. The button next to them, however, says "open," not "update." If you tap it, the app opens. There is no option to update it again.
Some other aspects of this:
-It doesn't happen if you update apps by downloading directly to the device, only when syncing updates from iTunes.
-When another app needs an update, the ones that were listed as needing updates will disappear from "Available Updates," but the new app or apps will exhibit the same problem.
-If you remove an app and reinstall it from iTunes or by downloading, that app will no longer be listed as needing an update. If you do that for all apps that need updates, the badge goes away. But it always comes back again as soon as another app needs an update.
-Turning on automatic updates will "fix" it once a new app is updated, but if you turn off automatic updates the problem recurs. Since automatic updates is another method of directly downloading updates, that is not surprising.
-The apps themselves are actually updated during the iTunes sync. This is a problem with the notification of needing an update rather than with the actual update. Possibly this is a problem with iTunes communicating with the device that the apps are updated.
I don't know if this is happening with everyone and people just don't notice or care or usually download updates OTA. I prefer not to update that way because some of the apps are large and have to go to several devices. I find it very annoying. I finally just turned off the notification badge. I think it's a problem with iTunes. It started around the time iOS8 was released but there was a new iTunes at that time as well.

Jan 10, 2015 4:50 PM in response to frazzm737by jameshoty,I did not reset the iPad nor pressing Home+Power button yet. The only thing I did was to remove the app and reinstall it back. Will monitor the situation.

Jan 10, 2015 4:56 PM in response to medgirlby jameshoty,Thanks @medgirl for sharing your experience too. And I agree with you that this could be a bug when the version upgrades. But what is important is that there is solution but the relevant. And thanks for submitting this "bug". I suggest that you call Apple for immediate help if the situation is unbearable to you. Submitting a bug does not necessarily mean that Apple will call you.

Mar 18, 2015 10:52 AM in response to medgirlby Wise2,I have the same problem and tried all the suggestions in the forum without success.
I have upgraded to the latest iOS in my iPad (8.2) and my iTunes (12.1.1.4 (64 Bits).
It was already happening in both previous versions.
Annoying.
I do not have, nor will I enable Auto updates.
I hope thy fix this soon.

Mar 18, 2015 11:16 PM in response to Wise2by jameshoty,Hi wise2,
I know it is annoying but after all, it is not a critical situation that I want it to be rectified with immediate effect. One thing I am sure when I am in this Apple family, it is like in your religion, your prayer will be heard one day if we have a little patient.

Mar 26, 2015 6:10 PM in response to jameshotyby JGA1978,I had the same problem today... Here was my fix:
1) Make a complete backup of your device and the apps to your computer with Apple iTunes.
2) Completely power off your iDevice.
3) Reboot your computer and then re-open iTunes on your computer.
4) Connect your power cord to your computer.
4) Press and hold the home button while connecting the cable to your device.
5) When the device is recognized by iTunes as being in "Recovery Mode", choose the "Update" option. (Do not use the restore option)
6) Wait for the update process to complete.
7) If all went well the problem should be fixed.
Note: I was already running the latest version of iOS 8.2 (12D508) when I used the above method to correct the problem.
Hope this provides some relief to the other OCD users out there - I know it did for me!
Edited to add: This should not delete any of your information, contacts, messages, pictures, videos, music, or other items.

Mar 27, 2015 4:42 AM in response to JGA1978by CPC,★HelpfulI had the same problem, but on my iPhone. Here's what fixed it for me:
(1) log out of App Store on device
(2) restart device with home button/power hold down
(3) log back into app store on device
Once I did all 3 steps, the "open" button changed back to "update" and the "update all" turned blue again (vs grayed out).
