It's interesting that this "no toolbar" glitch occurred when I was on another website and then had clicked on a link to download a song, the proceeds of which would go to the Redcross. This link took me right to iTunes but in this faulty display mode. I did try moving my cursor to the top of the screen as you had suggested but this didn't do anything. I eventually stumbled across a post in the support community which suggested going into displays and changing the display size....this worked and I was then able to access that top toolbar in iTunes. And then after turning off my laptop and then getting it started again this morning, this whole issue seemed to be rectified. But thanks again for your support.
