Q: sleep wake problem with Yosemite on my Mac Mini Mid 2012

I have a problem with Sleep Wake on a Mac Mid 2012 Mac Mini running 10.10, I was also a beta test user, and had seen the same problem before the official release. After the Mac Mini goes to sleep, and you try to wake it, it sits frozen, you can not enter your password, after about 5 minutes, the Mac reboots, and you can enter your password, the keyboard works again. I am using the Apple bluetooth MC184LL/A wireless keyboard. This same problem is occurring with the Logitech K760 bluetooth solar keyboard. I am now going to try only a standard USB keyboard, to see if the problem is somehow related to bluetooth? I been sending the reports to Apple about this problem since I started the beta testing from the start of the Yosemite beta test. It seems this is low on the list or is somehow related to my machine only? I have never had any problems with my Mac Mini, and have never done anything to the device (I never opened the Mac).

Any one else with the same problem? Thanks!

My laptop is driving a second monitor via thunderbolt->DVI. When it is sometimes woken from computer (not screen) sleep the aux monitor will show the desktop and cursor, but the primary desktop on the laptop monitor is black. I can move the cursor, but have no desktop access that I can see on the laptop. If I unplug the aux monitor, I briefly see the desktop on the main computer, but it goes dark after a second. This started with the 10.10.1 update.

Had this issue with Mavericks; I'm still running Mavericks.  Needed to turn off my Sound Platform (blue tooth enabled) before awakening.

I am now starting to wonder if Safari is the issue. I set my MacBook Pro to never sleep, and that solved this problem (albeit I would rather not waste all that energy) but now I seem to be having to hard quit for non-responsive Safari Web Content problems. I put an ad blocker on, thinking that would help, but apparently not. I have now set my default browser to Chrome (which I really hate to do). Is it just me, or is Apple quickly going downhill with quality since Steve Jobs died? If they keep going at this rate, they are going to take a huge tumble in the marketplace in the next 3-5 years. So disappointing.

I found my issue was with AirParrot.

I removed all of the AirParrot drivers etc using the AirParrot removal tool. After a reboot I logged in and put my macbook pro to sleep and woke it with no issues.

    Hope this helps!

Here is some additional information to fix the black screen issue:

If you have installed Airparrot at anytime during your Mac's life, run the following in terminal and reboot:

    • sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/APExtFramebuffer.kext
    • sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AirParrotDriver.kext
    • sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.squirrels.AirParrot.plist
    • sudo rm -rf /Applications/AirParrot.app

For users using OS X 10.9 or 10.10 the following additional commands may be necessary:

    • sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/APExtFramebuffer.kext
    • sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/AirParrotDriver.kext

I have removed AirParrot from my System with this tips, but the problem is still existing for me. Some days later my Mac was not reachable as in the past.

I hope that the latest 10.2.2 (public beta) solve this bug now. I have installed it today and will see if it happen again. Sadly Apple didn't mentioned nothing around  this problem in the update info in the AppStore Updater.

Same exact problem in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2012) after upgrading to Yosemite. I hope Apple will release a fix for it. Its quite weird using apple product having such frustrating issues.

I had the same problem and removed all usb devices and confirmed that the issue still existed. I Removed SystemConfiguration folder from Library>Preferences and then shutdown the machine. Then I performed SMC reset and booted. Then I reset the Power Management settings to default and then adjusted to my personal prefs as usual. Now everything works and sleep doesn't cause an issue.

I noticed several .lockfiles in the old SystemConfiguration that were not present in the newly generated SystemConfiguration. Also I originally had 17 plists and now have 7. If you are having the issue, I think simply removing the "com.apple.smb.server.plist.lockfile" should probably do the trick as the issue seems like an unreleased lock/block on the file by NetBios in my situation. I did not however test this since I believe "If it ain't broke, Don't fix it". But if someone is still having the issue could try and confirm that would help the community tremendously.

I was experiencing the same problem and renamed the "com.apple.smb.server.plist" file under Library>Preferences>SystemConfiguration.  So far, it seems to have resolved the problem.  I don't have a "com.apple.smb.server.plist.lockfile".

    Still a problem on 10.10.1.

Just upgraded 15" 2012 full spec Retina Macbook Pro to this version of Yosemite yesterday.

Love the OS but not loving this bug.

I have 1 single Thunderbolt cable connecting laptop to Belkin Thunderbolt Docking Station. No audio connected. No external monitor connected. Belkin dock only has FW800 external Hard drive & USB peripherals connected (mouse, keyboard, DYMO Printers etc...)

I haven't read all the posts as a lot of them.

Apple to fix in 10.10.2 then...

I am sad to report that 10.10.2 update did not fix my late 2012 Mac Mini wakeup issue. At this point I don't know if it will ever be fixed ...loosing faith quickly. As mentioned before, what prevents it from going into deep sleep is keeping a third party external dvd drive connected to a USB port. I guess I will have to live with that.

Any proposed solutions?  Because if you read over the 20 pages of complaints you'll notice people with different setups having a similar problem ALL when waking up from sleep.

I purchased a late-2012 mac-mini duo-core for my wife in November 2014, upgraded it to Yosemite after setup and before we even put speakers in the headphone jack (no hardware other than mouse and keyboard) it was having this gray screen freeze issue, so speakers is not the solution for us.  (Note: I personally own a mac-mini quad-core and I do not experience the wake issue my wife experiences.)

Tomorrow morning I am going to video record the issue and upload it to Youtube to have proof of the issue. It's very consistent, as in every time it goes to sleep and wakes. I'm pretty disappointed, 20 pages of complaints and nothing done about it is a major fail, especially considering Yosemite has been public for a few months now.  I should also mention that this did not happen with Mavericks, it happened after the Yosemite upgrade.

Before you do that extra work with the video, have you tried updating to the latest version of Yosemite?

As one of the updates specifically mentioned and fixed a 2012 mini headphone jack sleep / wake bug ... and that update finally cured mine ( which suffered the issue since the 2nd public beta. )

about the same problem here on mac mini late 2012 Yosemite 10.10.1 no external speakers - BUT NOT ALWAYS.

sometimes i experience a normal wakeup and am able to enter my password.

on other occasions the CURSOR JUST IS'NT THERE. the password input field is present though, but no entry is impossible.

the quick press of the power on button as wakeup trigger does not improve anything.

this started long after upgrading to Yosemite.

    so annoyingly unapple ....
