Do you have available space on the disk drive you are storing on?

When FCE begins to act in unexpected ways, the usual first step is to delete the FCE preferences:

The easiest way to do this is to download Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion (free):

Your preference will be reset to default the next time you launch FCE.

The only difference I made before this issue is upgrading my operating system to Yosemite, could it be the problem?

FCE was abandoned by Apple many years (and operating systems) ago.

Anecdotal reports of running FCE on Yosemite are neither abundant or definitive.

Some say they can get it to work, others say it does not work.

In either case, as FCE is no longer supported by Apple, you are on your own as to getting it to work.

If FCE is important to you,  and you want stable and predictable performance, then one option could be to make a partition with an earlier OS that FCE ran successfully on and boot from that partition when  you need to run FCE.

HOWEVER, before doing that, I would still trash your FCE preferences and also use Disk Utility to repair disk permissions and then try running FCE.

I restored the FCE preferences with Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion as you suggested, MTD, and the application is working perfectly fine.

But if later on I have problems again, I will delete them instead.

Thank you so much, you saved my day!
