    In the Apple TV you can try setting the Audio output to 16 bit and/or turning of Dolby.

    See Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation): Troubleshooting audio ...

    <EDIT>

    Looking at the specs for that TV it seems to support NICAM/A2 not Dolby. So I'd try turning Dolpy off first.

    Since a few weeks ago, apple tv just doesn't connect to the tv, just sound, cant change from mirroring to extended... i think its a major bug, other people complaining no answers, just using a software called parrot can i see the desktop on my tv.

    If it is an Apple TV 2 or 3 you can access the menu to turn off dolby. See the link I posted above.

    Not sure in your last post which device (Apple TV or Sharp TV) you are refrain to when you say it is 3 or 4 years old.

    Thanks Frank ,

    the TV is 3 - 4 years old but seems to have all the built in features , dvd player , hdmi connections etc

    the link you referred to appears to assume you are already in the menu .

    What i have come up when TV is powered up and the Apple TV connected is the Apple logo , from this point using the Apple TV remote nothing engages to bring up the Apple TV menu it simply remains as the apple icon with the occasional message about audio being incompatible and to check the output device , I have looked on the TV setting options and there are no facilitys to audio output . A little perplexed as most people literally plug an go .

    Thanks for your help

    When you press the button on the Apple remote does the light on the Apple TV change/flicker? It is possible that the remote you have is not paired with the Apple TV, it should be but occasionally a unit will ship with an unpaired remote. It is also possible the remote is defective.

    Have a look at Pairing and unpairing an Apple Remote and Troubleshooting the Apple Remote to see if you can get the unit to respond.

    If all that fails it would appear that the TV will not show video if the audio signal is not right and in that case you will not be able to try different audio settings to see if that clears up the problem at least while connected to this TV. Any chance you have access to another HDMI TV? you could test it out on that and turn off dolby and then ry connecting it to the Sharp.
