From your post I see that you are receiving attachments as winmail.dat files rather than the file itself. To learn more about winmail.dat attachments, and how to avoid them in the future, please take a look at the information in the article below.

i'm aware of the 'Outlook isue'. However, colleagues also running iOS 8.1. Receive the SAME attachment ...sent by the same sender....as Word files.Ergo I'm thinking that it is most likely an issue with MY settings..???
