Q: How to stay logged in to Apple Communities?

Hi all

 

I am quite new to the communities/forums.  I am having to log in pretty much every time I re-visit, and I can see no "stay logged in" type option.  Is there a way to stay logged in, or must I go through that at the start of every visit?

    Blimey!  Any ideas why not?  Over the years, I must have joined up to coming on a hundred or so different forums; possibly more.  I can't think of another one which does not allow you to request to stay logged in.

    It's not that much of a pain if you have AutoFill. Just click Login and press return, as your details will already be filled in for you.

     

    As Niel points out, the other forums you visit probably do not have a membership count of the same scale as Apple's official forums, and the servers would undoubtedly get overloaded if tens of millions were actively logged on.

    AppleID can have a payment method associated with it. If you leave a device in a logged in state, walk away for some period, some nefarious character could easily go to the Store and order hardware and have it delivered to themselves.

     

    Think of it as the same measure as a BANK takes to your login status

    eBay lets me stay logged in.  I reckon their membership count rivals Apple's.  And you can bank directly on eBay.

     

    As for AutoFiIll, perhaps Apple need to look into a way of making this impossible if they feel the need to hold hands so tightly.

    No, eBay does not let you stay logged in. It installs cookies so it knows who you are, but you still need to sign in. For example. Visit eBay right now. In the top left it will say, "Welcome, [Your Name]! (Sign in)." So it knows who you are but you still need to sign in before you can do any transactions or view any account details.

    I have my login streamlined to one-click (browser bookmark) + ENTER key - set it up this way

    1. visit discussions.apple.com
    2. navigate to the place you wish to "call HOME"
    3. click Login
    4. BOOKMARK that login page


    subsequent visits are by that bookmark and result in logged in state at your favorite spot

    @stevejobsfan0123.  That's not the case here.  I't only asks me once in a while to log in.

    Will the prior posters are technically correct,they didn't provide the whole story. Here what I do.  Leave a browser running.  Have one window devoted to apple login.  Run a reload manager in that window.  Here are the full details + other stuff.

     

    Here is my ASC work flow...

     

    1) I login.

          

    2) Block the automatic 30 minute logout.

     

         Unless you do something every thirty minutes you get logged out.  The forum software waits to tell you this as long as it can to keep you in suspense  ;-) .

     

            Start an auto reloader.

     

    I use Firefox and ReloadEvery.

    You need to pick a page that will reload over time without stalling out. It's ASC.  I've found my profile display the best to use. I get my Profile page after some  logins.  It's ASC.  Change rccharles to your apple id.

    Reply technique

    Open a new browser window.  Pick some discussion.  Open a reply window.  As long as this reply window is open, you will stay logged in.  The 30 minute times is reset as needed by the ASC software.

    3) I open another window to do my normal ASC browsing.

     

    4) I have a FireFox bookmark to goto the discussions that I have participated in. I've modified it to add on the content stuff.

    6) Adjust the ASC web page layout.

    7) Read and answer my old posts.  I kind of memorize the time I last posted. ( It's way bad that apple eliminated the last poster to a thread. )

     

    8) I use tabbed browsering.  From a list of discussions, hold down the command key then click on the link. You get two tabs this way. The original window will keep where you have been.
