Q: Computer Finds Monitor, Monitor Can't Find Computer

So I have two 24'' Dell monitors, one connected via Apple's DVI to Thunderbolt adapter that has been working for around two years now. The other is connected via a USB adapter, which has also been working for over a year. But today the USB monitor didn't wake when I logged in to my Mac. The other Thunderbolt one did.

So my monitor is black, turned off, but my Mac is still picking it up in the displays preferences. I can even drag windows to the black screen.  I have tried using the other Thunderbolt cable with it, and also a different mac - to no result.

Shine a torch into the display - can you see any image at all? It's possible for backlights to fail, in which case the display appears to work as far as the computer can detect, however the output is too dim to see.

If the display fails with other Mac's & cables I can't really see how it could be the Mac or OS X - it seems more likely to be a dead display.

Thanks for your quick response, but, no, still no image with the torch. Guess it's time for a new monitor!
