Do you have an IMAP email account shared on another device or with another person?

I like where Ralph is going with this. MSN / Hotmail is IMAP and all mail clients try to sync up what is on the server  - POP can choose to leave deleted messages on the server - but Microsoft decided to manage server space with IMAP - gone = gone.

After addressing the sharing issue Ralph mentions, check with MSN Mail for help. This does not have the earmarks of a Client Side problem.

Email auto deletes after about a week to save room on your iPad. If only the old mail is deleting you have no problems. You can still get your old email at msn.com.

As you speak with the confidence I am used to and know you don't shoot from the hip, you may know the answer to the questions your explanation raises in my feeble mind...

    • Is this a feature of the iPad? If so,
      • Why would a device that has the storage capacity that it does worry with teeny files like mail messages for conservation purposes?
      • Why would it not then ASK if it is OK? ("Are you sure you want to empty the Trash" is as old as Apple itself)
    • If a feature of MSN, same issues - plus what bizness of MSN's is it what is on someone's device?

    Aloha ÇÇÇ.

    It is a feature.

       Mail takes up room.

It doesn't ask because it's not trashing them. It's auto deleting them. I believe you used to be able to set how many emails you wantd saved on your iPad.

Now you set how long a time you want to sync your email. After a week my mail disappears. After you asked I checked you can set it to no limit.

It's not a feature if MSN. They have nothing to do with it, the mail never leaves their servers.

bob [ you knew my tongue was firmly in cheek - well, mostly ]

seems a futile effort. as I said before, messages are SMALL. For example, the notice of your post at

    Picture 5.pngPicture 6.png

These clearly are BIGGER than the space they use in the Entourage database.

I do not know what methods are used to store on iPad, but for the sake of discussion, let's use Mac Finder filesize of HTML. Still seems a piddly amount compared to all the media stored locally - or is it all really on iCloud?

At any rate, nice guy that you are, why not illustrate How to get vkgibson's issue fixed now that we accept why?

We don't jnow if it is the problem or if he is losing random emails. If it is the problem it,s settings, mail, contacts, calendars> accounts> mail> mail days to sync> no limit. But you knew that.

I was wondering how long it would take you to catch that line. Unfortunately my Level 6 super powers can't help you with the weather though.
