Q: Why can I not airdrop from my 2011 mid macair to my iPhone 5c with mavericks? Why do I need yosemite?

Why can I not Airdrop from my 2011 (mid) MacAir to my iPhone 5c (and vice versa)? I am running Mavericks (because Yosemite isn't aesthetically appealing to me), but does that make a difference? Any help would be appreciated.

1. Because your Mac’s hardware doesn’t support Bluetooth 4.0.
2. With regards to this, installing Yosemite won’t make a difference.
