Q: Move playlists from iPhone to iTunes

I accidentally deleted my iTunes playlists but they are still on my iPhone.  How can I copy them to iTunes on my iMac?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Thank you, this worked great for me which is not always the case re: apple. Glad I didn't have to get special software app etc. Thanks Chris. "Like" no longer available under your entry.

Thank you! I feel like that should have been obvious to me, but for some reason I could not find that option to save my life!

Connect the iPhone and select it in iTunes.

Click the gray disclosure triangle the left of the iPhone name in iTunes.

Select the playlist you want on the iPhone then right click - Export...

Save it as .xml file on the desktop.

Then iTunes menu File > Library > Import playlist and select the .xml file you saved on the desktop.

You can delete the .xml file on the desktop.

Does this work in Yosemite version of iTunes? I don't see the GRAY TRIANGLE left of iPhone name.

The traditional way to transfer playlist from iPhone to iTunes is just using iTunes, no doubt the fast way I think.

Your steps were very helpful. I just wanted to mention that the reason the person who started the thread didn't think you had answered her question is just language interpretation. You said, "Select the playlist you want on the iPhone then right click - Export..."

What you meant was "Select the playlist you want [that is] on the iPhone..." but that sentence can also mean and therefore be interpreted as, "Select the playlist you want [to have] on the iPhone..." I'm pretty sure that's where the confusion came in.

Chris Chris Chris, I am having the same problem as Melissa/OP and you seem to fail to understand the situation we are facing. Yet all you say is it is solved. Let me give you a clearer picture. If we could locate the playlist on our iTunes, we COULD just follow your steps, like many others who you have helped and gratefully thank you for your awesome advice. You see, the problem is that the playlist is not showing up on iTunes. Please refer to the image, only stock playlists shown in iTunes when there are playlists in my iPhone. So if you or other posters to come is unable to solve it, please don't babble on how Melissa/OP can't seem to solve the problem despite your flawless advice.

You seem to fail to comprehend what I wrote.

If we could locate the playlist on our iTunes, we COULD just follow your steps,

The playlist is not in iTunes. It is on your iPhone.

You need to select the iPhone in iTunes in order to see the playlists on the iPhone.

Your screenshot shows the playlists in iTunes.

Select the iPhone in iTunes (the iPhone icon at top left of iTunes window) and you can see the playlists on the iPhone.

The very first line in the very first response to this thread is, "Connect the iPhone and select it in iTunes."

    Try that...
