Q: LC III System 7.1 installer floppys

Finally I could fix my floppy drive! Does anyone know where i can download the floppy images for System 7 of the LCIII? I'm trying to install the OS with my system 7 diskettes and no luck it says that i need a newer version of system 7, and that this one do not work on this model. Is for the enabler?

The LC III shipped with OS 7.1, so OS 7 and 7.0.1 aren't supported.  I ran OS 7.6.1 on my LC III, but had the memory maxed out at 36 MBs and (more importantly) I connected an external SCSI CD-ROM drive to it.  With OS 7.6.1 and a CD-ROM drive, that LC III felt much more modern.  I also replaced the internal hard drive with a 160 GB drive.  Have you checked ebay for a set of the OS 7.1 installer diskettes?  There are Mac dealers online who may have it, but they'll charge a high price for them.

As Jeff pointed out, System 7.1 is required for an LC III.

It must be a special version of System 7.1 for the LC III (with a system enabler). A plain System 7.1 will not boot the computer in question. If available, a separate system enabler (System Enabler 003 in this case) can be placed in a normal 7.1 system folder in order to achieve the needed functionality.

    Addendum

If a 7.1 floppy disk contains a System Folder, the System Enabler 003 can be placed directly inside that folder.

If a floppy instead has a System suitcase immediately on the diskette, together with other files (no System Folder), the System Enabler 003 can be placed on the base level of that floppy.

    Carlos,

It is not clear to me what kind of file you have (and I do not want to download anything for a test from an unknown source). Generally speaking, a system enabler file should be expected to have an icon like a Finder file (but with a different name). It is unfortunate that Apple's older software downloads list does not seem to be around any more. In an article http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22559 a text reference is made to an even older asu.info.apple.com, but that page appears to be inaccessible as well (except perhaps through an Internet archive search). When the Apple download pages were available, people had trusted and secure places for system software downloads for a number of early machines.

EDIT: Just noticed that you had solved the enabler problem. What is the matter with the hard drive? Have you tried different formatting utilities?
