Dec 29, 2014 3:28 PM in response to xeonic84by xeonic84,Actually that probably wont work, turned out the problem was using icloud I had restored my contacts from an old iphone onto a new one that didn't have the text tone set for a specific contact. So when I did the notification reset I had some one text me and it appeared to be working. Later I received a text from the specific contact that had a different text tone set from the old iphone and there was no sound. Turns out I had to edit that specific contact and change the text tone to one the new phone has.

Dec 31, 2014 11:28 AM in response to ttorganby xeonic84,What worked for you? Reseting
notifications for the messages app or changing the tone in contacts?

Jan 1, 2015 1:05 PM in response to GIS_Kidby Jazzysue,I have been having this problem with my iPhone 6 as well. Resting always seemed to solve the problem, but was tired of having to do that.
Today I noticed that I did not hear a sound when I received an email on my iPhone, but it did on my iPad. The problem seemed to be that my Bluetooth was connected to my Sony sound bar, but the sound bar was on TV and not Bluetooth for my phone. Once I disconnected from the sound bar my sound came back on my phone. This seems to be a weird glitch. Hopefully they will have a fix, but at least I now know to watch that I am not connected to another Bluetooth device.

Jan 2, 2015 10:46 AM in response to Jazzysueby Devin3627,i made a account just for this site. what fixed the problem for me was my phone relied on volume instead of ringer tone volume. go to any video app and turn the volume up all the way. its a crappy bug in apple's programming. the phone is using video volume as a text tone. it was like this for 2 days until i messed with the audio volume. it is definitely apples fault.
(do not disturb) wasnt on, it still vibrated too when text tones wouldnt sound. -
Jan 2, 2015 7:11 PM in response to xeonic84by Sherieberry,Thank you so much! This fixed my issue. It was driving me crazy. Just to let everyone know, shut off notifications for messages in settings, power off your phone, then power back on and turn on message notifications. Presto, it is now fixed!

I Can hear my texts now.

Jan 12, 2015 8:52 AM in response to MAAL_canby Tom Torrillo,This happens with my iPhone 6 Plus and is very annoying to say the least.
It happens for me after I unplug my phone from my car's USB port, can replicate this behavior every time.
Restarting the phone clears whatever that does to the notifications system when locked.
Anyone else find this to be the cause?

Jan 13, 2015 8:43 AM in response to Devin3627by pmshop,BINGO Devin3627 !!! That was it exactly.
Go to YouTube, play a video and turn up the volume.
Mine was on "zero", all the way down.
This action will restore text tone volume when the screen is locked.

Jan 13, 2015 10:02 PM in response to pmshopby JSharke,The video volume thing might work for some people but that's clearly not what the wider issue is here. My video playback volume is turned all the way up and yet I still don't receive notifications sometimes. It's not just that the phone doesn't make a sound - sometimes notifications don't appear at all. I get no banner, no pop-up and nothing appears in the notification center. A crucial thing to remember is that the notifications sometimes appear. If it were a case of some setting somewhere being out of whack, I wouldn't see them at all.
It's not just texts for me. Reminder notifications sometimes don't show either. Yesterday I set two reminders, one for 9pm and the other for 9:30pm. Neither appeared. And yes, I have notifications set up and active for reminders.
This is a horrible, horrible bug and to be quite frank it's made me see the iPhone (and Apple) in a whole new light. It did look at one point as if the iPhone would become a viable BlackBerry alternative for business. All of that is out of the window now that I cannot rely on my iPhone to deliver notifications that are important to my business. I've lost money because of this junk. Going forward, I find I can't fully concentrate on what I'm working on because I'm always paranoid that some message has arrived that I wasn't notified about. I'm constantly checking my phone. Apple needs to fix this issue and fix it now. This is either a communication device or it isn't. I can install all of the latest and greatest iPhone apps but if my phone can't handle this most basic communication functionality then I'm going to have to say goodbye to it. BlackBerry is looking more and more attractive by the day. I may have grown tired with RIM and their failure to keep up with the times, but at least my old BlackBerrys never missed one single notification. Not one.

Jan 14, 2015 4:02 AM in response to JSharkeby pmshop,Ok, then that is not the original issue on this thread.
From OP:
"I've been trying to find an answer to this question, but have yet to resolve it. I have a new iPhone 6 plus. When a new message is received, the screen wakes up and displays the message info, but there is no associated sound. I have a sound set for messages in settings, but it doesn't matter what I choose, it still does not make a sound when an iMessage or text message comes in. The sounds do work when the phone is unlocked. I do not have Do Not Disturb turned on, the volume switch is turned on and the volume is at the top value."
This thread is not about notifications not showing at all.

Jan 16, 2015 9:42 AM in response to GIS_Kidby tyousa,I was having similar problem, but it is fixed.
In settings, go to Do not Disturb.
Manual ( turn Off)
Allow calls from ( Everyone)
You are done.

Jan 18, 2015 5:06 PM in response to JSharkeby kjlippy,I had the same problem until tonight. Played with ring tones, do not disturb, volume, and everything else posted. What I found is that when you go to sounds/text tone, there are two types of tones in the scrolling menu. The top set of tones are for alert tones and the bottom set are ringtones. They are separated by a gray bar that states their purpose. Many of the tones are the same name. You need to set your text alert in the Ringtones and reminders, alarms, and such in alerts. The weird thing about this menu is when you go to sounds/ringtone the menu is reversed. Mine works in locked mode or unlocked now. I have an Iphone 6 8.1.2. My problem started after my latest OS upgrade. Hope this helps.

Jan 18, 2015 5:42 PM in response to kjlippyby pmshop,Sorry kjlippy, but this cannot be a valid fix due to the fact that ALL tones categorized under Alert Tones or Ringtones work with Alert Tones/ Ring tones. The "top set of tones" you mention can and do work as Ringtones just as "bottom set are Ringtones" can and do work with Alerts. It seems after reading this forum, playing with Do Not Disturb or adjusting the volume in YouTube are the only "high level" suggested solution.
To suggest that Alert Tones are only for alerts and Ringtones are only for Ringtones is not a solution.
