Q: No sound. Built-in output not available.

I recently got my sound entirely disabled. In system preferences / sound menu, I cannot select ANY sound output, neither "built-in", nor "digital line". Nothing. I browsed the forums, tried the jack plug in-out, the toothpick trick, the erasing ".plist" files but all to no avail. How can I find and reinstate the built-in speakers on the output menu?
