Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Doesn't anyone read this thread before they post more rubbish about routers and settings etc etc?.

This problem was diagnosed, with proof, months ago. Please Google and then READ "WiFried: iOS 8 WiFi" before posting more stuff that is only going to confuse novice users and waste their time.

I bought a new ASUS RT-AC87U router (AC) and it worked better than my Linksys EA4500 N router, but today I had the same problem again, so buying a new router is not the solution for the Wifi problem in IOS 8.1.2 and my iPhone 6.

Yes, I was just backing you up as we have both said it a number of times and no one seems to take any notice

Thanks. I will be out of the country for two weeks - hoping by the time I get back Apple has a fix.

I too have been contacted by Kevin from Apple regarding my posts in this thread. I'll try to tee a time that suits both of us, because really, if they're offering to help, we should try at least and solve this together. It's in everyone's interest, so I'll make myself available as best I can. I'll update on the progress. (kudos Apple for reaching out).

After some more mucking around over the last few days, I can now confirm that my macs on wifi are also very much effected. It seems there is something underlying here on both OS's or hardware. Networking speeds wifi to wifi on my macbook pros are almost useless. 64gb of data came up as 2 days to copy - thunderbolt cable using the macbook in disk mode took under 10 mins.

I also used the 'sweet spot' wifi app to walk around my office and compare the speed. Definitely being within 2m of the router see's a bit jump in the TX speed and MCS index. Once you move outside that, the speed drops significantly to the mac's.

MBP 10.10.1 at under 2.0m to the wifi:

    Screen Shot 2015-01-19 at 8.50.12 am.png

    Internet speed speed (ookla): 30Mbps

    Screen Shot 2015-01-19 at 8.51.22 am.png

Using ethernet (same router but tested a couple of days ago now):

    Internet speed speed (ookla): 100Mbps

    Screen Shot 2015-01-13 at 9.12.27 am.png

That's a big difference don't you think? The router can pipe 100Mbps no prob, just not via wifi.

Here's some pics demonstrating the wifi drop in performance over a couple of days (iOS 8.1.2 iPhone 5s - same router):

    IMG_3871.PNG

    IMG_3868.PNG

Interesting how the ping is consistent. The iPhone 5s should have a wifi speed of around 100Mbps (correct?), I am yet to get anywhere near those numbers.

For those interested in knowing what your wifi is doing on a mac:

On a mac, if you hold down the Option key and click wifi in the menu bar, you will see expanded info on the wifi you have connected too. You can also get very detailed wifi specifics through About This Mac-> System Report-> Network-> Wifi. This gives you the router supported settings (a.b.g.n. ac etc), the channel you're using, the channel nearby wifi are using etc - so it's easy to compare wifi settings.

It'll be good to see other detailed specs on here (not just a complaint about performance), maybe we can see some patterns.

People are taking notice and some are buying new routers not because of this issue as I did.  Just reinforcing what you and others have said that hardware will not fix the issue. The more proof the better and maybe Apple will do something (but I'm not holding my breath).

There are plenty of Mac OSX WiFi issues (mostly no/slow connection) in those forums.  I agree that iOS 8 and OSX WiFi issues may be related.

Today I've lost my WiFi on my second iPhone 4s. It is also greyed out and can't get it back. Both of iPhone 4s were purchased at the same time. On first iPhone 4s I have lost WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities shortly after I updated to iOS 8.1.2. So I didn't update the second one to latest iOS in fear to loose the same thing. My second iPhone 4s was running iOS 8.1. This is very frustrating. I can't use personal hotspot via wi-fi among other things...

On the other hand I have OLD iPhone 3g, iPhone 3gs and HTC Wildfire and WiFi is working like a charm. This is just for comparison. The way I see it I can rely on my older devices without worrying when something is going to "broke".

It's been quite a while since users had announced disapproval regarding wifi bugs and yet still no word from Apple.

I do not believe that I or any of my family members will buy Apple phone in the near future 'cause this is unacceptable. I am a long time customer and I was satisfied with iPhones I bought but the line must be drawn somewhere. I feel like I'm literally throwing money into the wind. What are the chances that two phones have the same kind of problem?

I took a screen snapshots of my second iPhone 4s because picture is worth more than 1000 words.

Amazing... simply amazing that writing solid WiFi code is beyond the capabilities of Apple software engineers.

SSeems making an announcement that they're aware of the issue and working on it, and apologising to affected customers is also beyond Apple's capabilities. Jokers.

Yeah I recently came a cropper with this one also ever since upgrading to 8.1.2. I was expecting there to be initial issues with 8 so waited for a later update version but now have major problems keeping my WiFi connection open for more than 30 seconds or so and have to keep toggling WiFi slider on and off to reconnect which is very annoying.

I have tried 'Disable Wi-Fi Networking Services'

I have tried 'Reset Network Settings'

I have tried 'Set Custom DNS'

I have tried 'Restore and Setup as new iPhone' which has caused issues as I need the WiFi to restore my latest backup!

I have not tried throwing the phone under a bus!

When will a fix be sorted out? Any Ideas? Anyone got other options to try to work around this bug?

    Thanks

This feels like the emperor's new clothes.

Why aren't the Main-Stream-Media picking up on this?

I agree!  I wondered why no media coverage about 15 pages ago.  What's up with that?
