Q: GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Hello there,

 

Since upgrading to Mavericks here is what happens:

 

I use my computer without any problems, leave, it goes to sleep. I come back, it wakes up for about 5 seconds and has a GPU Panic and reboots.

 

I've read about the GPU recall for the Mid-2010 Macbook Pro. But my computer is older than 3 years, so Apple won't take it.

 

I understand they were clear about the rules of the recall. But then again, If I found out I screwed up in my work, I'd try to fix it, despite of how long later the damage showed up.

 

Anyway, here are the specs of the computer and the crash log. Anyone has any ideas what could be causing it? I've done a clean install of Mavericks, and it didn't fix it.

    I just took my Mid 2010 with the same issue in to the Genius bar, and as of Jan 5th 2015, they agreed to replace the logic board at their expense. Call Apple Support, setup an appointment with the bar, and ask nicely. Point out that Apple had a recall period, but you didn't know about it until well after the recall period expired.

    Thank you! I tried your solution and it seems to work for me now. I've tried several actions that provoked panics since I upgraded to yosemite (playing certain games, opening certain applications, etc) and everything works like a charm. All my panic logs are related to read/write issues. I'm still wondering if I might get gpu panic for any other reasons, but system looks stable by now.

    I just want to confirm if after removing the files you didn't have any GPU panics again...

    I understand you did it about a month ago...?

    Have you updated to Yosemite by now?

    I need my laptop for work, and now i have no time to upgrade to yosemite.

     

    Then i am on mavericks and the only issue i have notice is  when laptop is complete discharged, in snooze mode, i need to reboot because the screen is inintelegible.

     

    i hope you understand me, and sorry for my bad english.

    When i have time, probably try to upgrade to yosemite and delete/move this sames files.

    Greetings benoler and all,

     

    I have just uncovered the same situation with my beloved MBP mid 2010. I have had this machine and it has worked long and hard for me in various efforts from iPhone/iPad development to professional use at work, and play at home.

     

    Recently I've rekindled an old hobby of RC modelling, which has led me to do some RC simulation using X-Plane, which is a fantastic sim and is brilliant at the aerodynamics and modelling of aircraft and helicopters. Unfortunately this means that the GPU is being utilized to it's max to crank out 60fps and facilitate the simulation in all its glory !! Since doing the upgrade to Yosemite (I admit I'm an early adopter) it seems now that this combination of GPU and OS and hard workouts is leading to a kernel panic after about 5 minutes of use once I start the graphics intensive app and the fan kicks on. I've had this computer as a daily worker since I got it in 2010 and over the last 8 months have had a few dozen crashes prior to the Yosemite upgrade.

     

    The crashes were related to normal operations, everything from browsing in Safari (it was usually the opening of a new window after Yosemite that would do it), and even simple stuff like using MS Word for various 50 page documents.

     

    Anyhow, last night I tried your recommended fix, thanks very much. Unfortunately it doesn't make a difference for me and it still seems that the problem still exists and hasn't been affected

     

    If anyone else has had ideas as to how to fix this, please do refresh the posts. I'm planning on getting on the phone to Apple to see what they can do for me, as I've been an Apple customer since I was about 7 years old, and have managed to convince literally dozens of my friends and family to convert over to the white side as well.

    Hi all,

     

    It seems that I have the same issue with my MacBook Po 15 mid 2010.

    I have tried this explained by someone on this thread

    what fixed the issue of "recurring GPU panics at random times" for me was to alter the Configuration.plist file located in "/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/CoreGraphi cs.framework/Resources/".

    Just copy that file to the Desktop and edit it with XCode.

    Where it sais "ForceSessionDrawsVirtualFramebuffer" change "NO" to "YES"

    -> This setting will force the GPU to write data only to the main memory instead of using the VRAM.

    Note: i assume this fix only works for GPU panics caused by read access failure (see what your panic dump says).

    Note: do not use these settings if you're low on memory.

    I feel the panics have slowed down but still happening. I have installed gfxcardstatus, when it stays on I (integrated) so running on Intel GPU no problem. I can't get it to stay because it switches to D when I open some apps like Word or iPhoto...and then panic happens again.

    Someone was mentioning installing an earlier version of this program but the link provided does not seem to work for me, anyone has an idea on how to download an earlier version that would allow me to stay on integrated all the time?

    Thanks for your post. It convinced me that all is not lost and so I did the same. I explained that this issue was only noticeable after I upgraded to Yosemite and prior to that I didn't know my Mac had the problem or of the recall program. They agreed to repair and replace the logic board for free. Nice one Apple, huge respect.

    I received my MBP (mid 2010) in Dec2010. I had been suffering from panics for several months. I arranged a Genius Bar reservation (Madrid) and took it there two weeks ago. After they run the hardware test it was clear that this computer was affected by the GPU problem. They explained me that the quality program to change it for free had finished in Dec 2014 in my case (4 years from purchase). But the Genius talked to the store manager and got an approval.

    They changed the logic board with no cost in less than a week. They explained me it was an exception, because it was only one month "overdue".

     

    I must say the attention was very good and they were very polite at all time. And so was I explaining that I hadn´t received any information from Apple that my computer could be part of a quality program, even though the serial number is registered with my email from the date of purchase, and that´s why I didn't know about the program and its deadline.

     

    I would advice anyone in the same situation to make a reservation in a Genius Bar and give it a try. And remember to be nice.

     

    Good to know that Apple also uses its insane cash box to keep clients satisfied and maintain loyalty.

    Is there any way to run the VST test yourself, or do you have to take it into Apple?

     

    I saw your alternative, but was wondering with all these people having the same issue, that VST couldn't be found and used somehow.

    Kind, but, not so kind!

     

    I Bought my computer just a moth after it was launched. A year after I bought it The HDD was useless but it was still on warranty so they replaced it for free. Now I have struggled with the gpu crash since Mavericks. I upgraded to Yosemite expecting some improvement bit it just got worse.

     

    I went to the genius bar and they simply and kinda politely denied ANY possibility of getting a free repair; even though I mentioned this precise thread.  To get it fixed required just €550. JUST THAT ? People who bought the 2011 model are already organising a class action.

    SUCCESS: I updated to Yosemite a few weeks ago on my mid-2010 MBP. Same thing. 4-5 GPU kernel panics in a day. I downloaded GfxCardStatus app v 2.1, chose "Integrated Only" and voila, no more GPU kernel panics. The MPB now uses the Intel Graphics GPU exclusively and not the flawed one. Thanks to BOBRZ who posted about it on page 1 of this thread.

     

    Added bonus: Safari and Firefox are now opening quickly and Safari is finally working correctly. I'm also not getting the occasional system slowdown I was getting for no reason I could explain.

     

    I'm a bit miffed that I didn't receive some kind of recall notice from Apple about the free fix when it was happening. It would have been a nice courtesy. I wasn't aware as somehow my MB made it through to Yosemite with only a few panics a year that I thought were just anomalies.

    I ended up going back to Apple and having them replace the logic board $300.  Works like a champ now.  I tried using GfxCardStatus first but my success was not 100%.  Now I have Zero issues but it cost me $300.

    Thanks. I was aware of that 300.00 fix, but don't want to sink money into this machine if I don't have to. Rather save it for a future MB. And for what I use it for, it's working just fine. It feels like a new machine the way it's working. Besides browsers, I mostly use it for writing, Garageband, and some drawing on Gimp. Nothing too heavy. So, I'm good.

    I'm glad the fgxcardStatus workaround was useful to you. I also use it but I think it is not

    what we as customers should be expecting from apple, "Yes is our fault but its up to you find a way to make your mac (partially) usable".


    I do need to use some applications which require heavier graphics processing.

    I also don't think we bought a macbook pro to settle for a browse-and-text-edit computer a few years  after purchase (no disrespect intended).


    Curiously, my original post was edited. I mentioned that people who bought the MBP 2011 affected by a similar problem also filled a petition
    in the "Change" website, the one with .org domain.

     

    Maybe we should do the same.

    I agree. I have made an appointment at the Genius bar and will ask nicely for a free fix as I was never notified of any problem during the recall period (like Toyota has notified me when there was a recall), and everything was fine until Yosemite.
