Q: Numbers templates

I can load my Numbers templates onto my ipad Air running ios 8 using iCloud, but when I try to do the same thing with my iphone 5s also running ios8, I get an error message and they do not load. What to do?

IMac, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

What do you mean by "load templates"?  Templates come built into Numbers, so why are you trying to "load" them?

The folks in the iOS iWork discussions might be able to give you more help.

I should have been more clear. I am referring to the "My Templates" folder where I have designed my own specific templates. It loaded fine for iPad Air but confusingly, once it is on iCloud it does not seem to be accessible by my iPhone. So I tried the same process which entails finding the com.apple.numbers file and emailing the files; selecting them on iPhone then telling them to be opened by Numbers. Numbers will ask if you want them to be added to Templates. I said yes and after a brief attempt it returns the message that it cannot load the templates, an error occurred, but there is no reference as to what that error might be nor how to fix it.

It's a stab in the dark, but sometimes (as I'm sure you know) mysterious problems can clear up when you 1) power down your device and restart, or 2) delete the app and re-download, or sometimes a combination of the two.  If you've got things working on your iPad with your templates, then you might try these steps with your iPhone.

Were it so easy...whaddya think? I'm running MicroSoft? Where a restart fixes everything?

Just kidding. Been there, done that, no joy.

Thanks Jerrold. I have had a few views over there, but no one has attempted an answer.

How are you "loading" the templates onto your iPhone?

Hi SGIll: I have attached a series of photos, in order, to demonstrate. I received these instructions (and as I said, they worked with my iPad)

First I emailed the files as attachments and accessed them on the phone.IMG_3194.JPGThen I selected Estimate Blank.IMG_3195.JPGI then hit the share button and got the next screen.IMG_3196.JPGI was prompted thus.IMG_3197.JPGThen I saw this.IMG_3198.JPGIMG_3199.JPGAs you can see, I have all of the standard templates.IMG_3200.JPGNormally "My Templates" should appear just below the last of the standard templates.IMG_3201.JPG

That is odd. Maybe some obscure bug in the iPhone version but not on the iPad version?  (I'm assuming you loaded them on the iPad in the exact same way).  Is it possible to try to open the templates from iCloud Drive instead of emailing them?

Brilliant SGIll! Cannot understand why I did not think of that. Probably because when I searched for a solution I and it worked for the iPad, I wanted it to work for the iPhone too. Instead, I dragged & dropped the files from Mail to iCloud Drive. Opened them on my MB Air, they were saved in Templates and are now accessible across all my devices.

    Thanks for being persistent.

Interesting. So it seems the way to go with templates is to use Numbers on a Mac to save them as templates and they'll sync across. Good to know.
