Hi Everyone, I had a similar issue. No need to reset SMC, that can be quite disruptive to your system(s). Just use the following command to reset the camera service on your mac. Cmd+C/V this into terminal:

    sudo killall VDCAssistant

    You're welcome

Hi, I am following this set of posts and I have tryied everything but have no success yet. I have a similar problem, but on the system report I can see that there is a camera in my Mac. There is no problem related to connection. But, when I try to use the camera in any software, the green light turns on but I get a black screen, no image at all. As I said, I tryied all: reset SMC, different user, kill VDC... etc.

Just for the record, I have a mid-2012 MAcBook Air.

Is there anything I did not do yet that I could try?

    Thank you!

    You're welcome.

When your Mac cannot recognize the camera in System Information after you have tried all the suggestions already offered, you likely need professional help. Unless you have a current backup of your startup disk, make one now.  Then use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion: "... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."

Not sure if this will help anyone here, but I was pulling my hair out with the same issues as everyone else.  FaceTime camera suddenly stopped working, etc.  I tried every solutions here other than a reinstall.  First off, my set up is a MacPro 2014, 3 monitors.  Two Apple displays (miniDisplay not Thunderbolt) and one Thunderbolt display.  In a last ditch effort, I remembered thing to maximize my USB port usage by plugging one of the display port monitors USB connector into the USB port of the Thunderbolt display.. hoping to free up a faster port on the back of the MacPro for drives, etc.  I did this a week or so ago, and never realized but when I did I guess that killed the cameras in all displays.  When I began reading and read that the iSight/FaceTime camera appears as a USB device, It hit me that possibly there was a conflict in the USB hubs of the monitors since the cameras are showing up as USB devices.. rearranged my plugs so that each display has it's own USB port (rather than daisy chaining the monitors).. the instant I unplugged the last USB from the monitor.. poof.. camera showed up and FaceTime is back.  Have everything plugged back in and not a single issue.

So for anyone having issues where the rest advice is not helping.. double check your USB plug orientation and what item is plugged into which port.. you may have a conflict that is not allowing the cameras to mount properly.

Not sure if this is the same arrangement as others posting here, but I was having the exact same issues as those posting and this solved my problem.  Maybe count this as one more possible solution for anyone visiting this thread.

    Hope it helps someone!

My problem with with MacPro.. not a MacBook.. but the problem was clearly a USB conflict with the way my plugs were organized (daisy chaining monitors USB connections).. But I had similar symptoms as you.. green light on, camera showed up in system info, tried every remedy.. still black screen and no video feed to either FaceTime or PhotoBooth, etc.  Since mine was monitors, and your's clearly isn't that since on MacBook Air... maybe check if you have any USB device plugged in that may conflict.. try restarting with no USB devices attached (if you have not already tried that) to ensure no conflicts, etc... just a thought hoping it may help. I spent hours frustrated so hoping I can help someone with what I found in my case..

    Good luck

Buddha Dave, are you using the old LED Cinema display or the new Thunderbolt display?  I have a Macpro 2013 and the camera never worked for me with the LED Cinema display.  I also have an old macbook pro 2010 but the camera works fine on the display when connected.  I've tried the killall command and also the steps of your recommendation, but nothing works.  Are there other steps you may have taken?

    Thanks!

    K

Check that.  I just realized after I upgraded to Yosemite on both Macbook Pro and MacPro, the camera doesn't work on either computer.  Apple needs to come up with a fix.

Sorry for the delay to respond.  I actually have both the LED Cenema (x2) and one Thunderbolt display.  Since I figured out the USB issue I've had not problems at all.  That is so strange that you are having this issue.  My guess would be there is a conflict with something else running on the system.  I have a MacBook Pro, Air, and MacPro all running Yosemite with no issues on any camera.  I'd suggest (if you haven't already tried) booting in safe mode, and testing the camera so that no other application is running.  Otherwise, might try going into your user profile and one-by-one removing apps that load on boot.  Maybe one conflicting with something..

Buddha Dave, Thanks for getting back.  The camera on my Macbook Pro is in working order.  It's the camera on my LED Cinema display that isn't working when connected to either the Macbook Pro 2010 or Mac Pro 2013.  The Macbook Pro 2010 used to work without any issues and then after upgrading to Yosemite, that's when all don't work.  I have removed all USB devices and still, the camera on the LED cinema display cannot be detected for some reason.  I'm not sure if anyone else is having this issue and if there would be other solutions.

One of these will fix your camera problem:

    (1) If restarting your Mac doesn't fix the problem,

    (2) use Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090.

(BTW - The Troubleshooting article calls the camera an "iSight".  However, after the article was published, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD."  Regardless of the name of your built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)

Be sure to test more than one Apple app (Photo Booth, FaceTime, iMovie, QuickTime Player, etc.) in more than one user account.  Do NOT use the "Guest" account for this test.  If you do not have more than one user account for the testing, create a new one now.  If you need help, how to do it is explained in http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201754.

A "Standard" user account is all you need for testing.

    (3) If your cam won't work properly even with Apple apps, use OS X Recovery to completely reinstall your Mac OS from the Recovery System stored on your startup drive.  Don't bother testing Skype or other third-party apps until you have your camera working with Apple apps.

    (4) If none of the above suggestions resolve your trouble, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider to have your Mac professionally serviced. Be sure to backup your Mac and deauthorize iTunes before tendering it for service.
