Q: Is it possible to runTiger or Leopard on a MacBook Pro Retina using Boot Camp?

I have an old CADD application that  became difficult to use with Snow Leopard. The newer versions of the software have features I'll never use and is now priced beyond what I can afford, therefore, I would lIke to be able to run the old application with OS 10.4 or 10.5. I was told that I could make a Tiger or Leopard drive partition on the SSD using Boot Camp in order to use the old application on a new Retina MacBook Pro. Is this possible? It sounds too good to be true. Otherwise I'll have to downgrade my aging 2007 MacBook to 10.5.

Thank you,

MIchael

Not on your MacBook Pro model. It'll work on the older MacBook, with the difference that you use the Disk Utility and not the Boot Camp Assistant to partition the drive.

The good news is that instead of downgrading the whole Mac, you can make a single partition in 10.5.  Clone backup your system before partitioning and installing the other operating system.   Normally partitioning Mac OS X if there is enough free space will not erase the entire hard drive, but you can't be too careful.

Thank you for your suggestion regarding partitioning my old MacBook for OS10.5. I like that idea and I'll give it a try. Can't I just use my Time Machine for a back up or should I use SuperDuper to make a clone? I'll have to buy a new drive to make a clone as my external drive is pretty full with Time Machine backups. Should I use Disk Utility to partition my drive as recommended by Neil?

    1. A cloned drive will be directly bootable. Time Machine backups aren't until restored.

    2. You should use the Disk Utility on the internal drive.

Thank you, Neil for the clear explanation. I understand. There is a certain irony that I can run Window on a new MacBook Pro but not an older version of the Mac OS.
