Q: Trying to extend a wireless network with an apple express.

Trying to extend a wireless network with Airport Express from an Airport extreme 802.11ac.

Current connection as followed:

Modem --->> Airport Extreme

Would like the following connection:

Modem--->> Airport Extreme --->> Airport Express (wireless extension).

Use Airport Utitlity 6.3.2, Extreme sees the Express and allows the setup to start.

However, it ends up with the following: "An unexpected error occurred. Try again."

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

On your Mac, check to make sure that the following settings are in place:

Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)

    Open Network

Click on WiFi on the left to highlight it

Click on Advanced at the lower right

    Click the TCP/IP tab

Make sure that the setting for Configure IPv6 is set to Link Local Only

    Click OK

Click Apply in the next window

Now click Ethernet on the left to highlight it, and repeat the exact same sequence as above

    Restart the Mac

Power off the AirPort Extreme for a minute, then power it back on

Power up the AirPort Expess for a minute

Hold in the reset button on the back of the Express for 8-10 seconds and release

Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light

Try the setup again, and locate the Express about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless coverage.

Thank you for your detail explanation.

I tried and it still didn't work.

During the setting, it got stuck at "Waiting for Express", then the "An unexpected error occurred. Try again" reappeared.

Unfortunately, we are seeing a lot of users who are posting to say that they are having the same "unexpected error" messages, so it may take some time to find a workaround that may work for you.

The steps above are simply a restatement of Apple's own support document to "fix" the error. This issue began with Lion, and has continued through Mountain Lion, Mavericks and now Yosemite.   See this document:  AirPort base station not seen or "An unexpected error occurred" appears in AirPort Utility 6.3 - Apple Support

    Please try the following:

Power off the AirPort Extreme for a minute, then power it back up.

Perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Express as follows:

Power off the Express and wait a minute

Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Express

Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart

Try the setup again.  If that does not work, do you want to to try an iPhone or iPad for the setup.....assuming you have one handy?
